# How to Study Math The Cuemath Way

Most students find math extremely challenging. When exams draw near, they look for shortcuts to get good marks. A good number of “exam guides” get sold during the exam season. However, these do nothing to improve a student’s math.

Of course students pass exams by referring previously asked questions, but this isn’t the purpose of exams what our education system has come down to?

We need students to understand the concepts and realise the beauty of math. How do we do this? By helping them learn math the right way.

Here are a few steps that math experts from Cuemath have put together to help students study math.

- Get the basics right
- Practise time-based mental aptitude exercises
- Spend time solving puzzles
- Make use of learning aids

**Get the basics right**

Before delving into the topic of interest, make sure your students are strong with their basics. Knowing the basics helps in answering three key questions- what, how and why.

For example, if your student is facing problems in calculating percentages, the root of the problem lies in fractions. Tackle fractions first and once they’re thorough, percentages will seem easy.

**Practise mental aptitude exercises**

When students build their aptitude, they effectively build their sense of logical thinking. Pattern recognition, direction sense, understand relations are all examples of mental aptitude.

Allow your students to explore such exercises. What can make this more productive is challenging them to time based activities. These are usually done on a computer. There are a number of exercises available online to build mental aptitude. Alternatively, you can also have a look at the CueStudent app that Cuemath teachers use to help their students.

**Spend time solving puzzles**

Every math problem can be viewed as a puzzle. Incorporating fun puzzles in your math class will encourage your students to participate and solve them. Puzzles help students to think creatively and logically to find out solutions, which is what math is all about. Having your students solve puzzles regularly will coax them to explore multiple possibilities. They can also come up with multiple solutions.

This will help them understand that even real life problems can be solved using multiple approaches.

**Use learning aids**

Math can be visualized or “seen” using different learning aids. The use of learning aids in classrooms is slowly but steadily increasing. The method of touch-and-feel is very effective when it comes to learning. Using learning aids, students can actually “see” math using numbers, patterns and shapes. A few examples of learning aids are

- Snap on cubes
- Fraction blocks
- 3-D shapes
- Spike abacus etc.

Cuemath Teachers are equipped with a Mathbox that consists of a number of such learning aids.

Studying math is not a complex process. However, it should never be considered as a quick fix for exams. Math is around us everyday and hence, learning math should be an ongoing process. After all, isn’t it better to be prepared always?
