Newborn babies have 100 million brain cells known as neurons that multiply rapidly to facilitate Intellectual development. Parents need to understand the process of intellectual development in kids to help their child unfold into an intelligent adult. In this article, we decode intellectual development, look into the various developmental changes and activities observed in a child based on his or her age. Once we understand the changes, we get into the process of intellectual development and the various aspects associated with it. By the end of this article, we will share a few activities to help your child with rapid intellectual development.

What is Intellectual Development?

The evolution or progress of thinking, reasoning, conceptualizing, judging, relating or comparing skills, etc form the basis of intellectual development in kids.

If you visit a preschool drawing exhibition, you will find plenty of artwork with mismatched shapes and colors. As children grow up they start wondering, they want to know why skies have to be blue and trees have to be green. This is how intellectual development in young children takes place. Intellectual development meaning and definition are qualitative in nature.

Process of Intellectual Development

Perception

  • Children analyze the stimuli that are generated due to various actions and the resulting outcome when the same set of actions are repeated over and over again.
  • This helps children understand the dimensions and depths of objects located around them.

  •  Kids go around exploring their surroundings and try to recognize objects based on their previous experiences and memories.

Observation

  • A lot of information is accumulated by a child’s mind and only a part of it is retained. This retention is based on a child’s observation abilities.

  • Kids segregate the information received as stimuli into essential and non-essential elements to remember important details.

  • This ability is extremely important for kids to perform well in academics.

Learning and training

  • Pre-learning or training is an important part of intellectual development where kids understand how to control their brain to learn or develop new abilities.

  • Learning is a process that can only start once a child learns how to communicate. This communication can be facilitated either by language or expression.

  • Parents need to help kids understand how to learn something to stimulate logical reasoning.

Concept formation

  • Enables children to link information and objects through hypothesis, testing, and generalizations.

  • As kids start learning, they form concepts and analyze events based on their understanding.

  • The process of concept formation acts as a foundation for all academic activities and especially maths.

  • Parents can teach mathematical proofs and theorems to improve concept formation ability in children.

Language mediation

  • Communication through language is called language mediation which helps a child understand instructions.

  • The role of language in a child’s intellectual development and learning is crucial but poor language abilities can hinder a child’s all-round development.

  •  Initial stages of language development are marked by communication through expression. Naming a child helps to develop communication and language mediation abilities.

Did you Know?

More than 200 million children who are under the age of 5 years never reach their full developmental potential (1). At Cuemath, we help children achieve intellectual development as per their age and requirement, with customized learning material and games.

Cuemath is a lucid and child-friendly mathematics learning platform for kids from KG to 10th Class. Our puzzles, online classes, games, simulations, and activities help kids understand the foundations of maths.

How to Encourage Intellectual Development in a Child?

  1. Play memory games

Memory games help develop observation skills in children. You can use these games to improve your child’s vocabulary. There are different memory games available in the market. You can pick a game like Eureka or flashcards as per your child’s interest.

  1. Practice counting

Mathematical skills help children with concept formation and layout the foundation for simple and complex mathematical problems. You can make your counting chart or get it from the market. Paint objects to match the number, draw an apple for 1 and two apples for 2. Ask your child to count the number of objects in the chart every day.

  1. Solve mathematical puzzles

Mathematical puzzles will help your child with perception, pre-learning, and concept formation abilities. This activity is best suited for toddlers studying in preschool. You can try these mathematical puzzles with your child.

  1. Demonstrate mathematical proofs and theorems

Mathematical and logical reasoning abilities translate into academic performance. Proofs will help your child understand how to deduce important conclusions out of unorganized information either quantitatively or qualitatively.

  1. Play a musical instrument

This will promote pre-learning ability in a child to cope with scholastic activities at a later stage. Once the child is comfortable with a musical instrument they can take it up as a hobby or leisure activity. Parents can introduce their child to a simple instrument like mouth organ, flute, or keyboard.

  1. Start Cuemath activities

Kids may require additional assistance with intellectual development at different stages of growing up. Cuemath takes your child’s age and capabilities into consideration to design a mathematical learning journey that helps with academic performance as well as intellectual process. Once reasoning skills are developed in a child with the help of puzzles, animation, games, simulation, and mathematical proof, kids will start thinking on their feet.

  1. Help identify shapes and colors

Concept formation and perception abilities are enhanced by shape and color activities. This will help your child understand his or her surroundings and navigate around the neighborhood.

  1. Visit educational places

Observation, perception, and language mediation skills can be improved by visiting educational places. When a child visits a new place, he or she tends to observe things more carefully. During these visits, children learn about the history and importance of a place.

  1. Encourage reading and writing

Kids can write essays and read novels to imbibe advanced intellectual abilities. This will help them comprehend, judge, and analyze situations.

  1. Learn a new language

The role of language in children’s intellectual development and learning is indispensable and accounts for language mediation abilities.

Conclusion

Intellectual development meaning and definition can never capture the multiverse of brain development in a child. We can only assess and analyze based on our current discoveries. Parents on the other hand understand the unique growth rate of their children which may deviate from the stipulated period in certain cases. Such differences make a child unique and may or may not result in developmental anomalies. However, it is important to understand if your child is trying to express his or her difficulty in any intellectual process associated with intellectual development. Try to habituate your child with activities that can help improve brain development.
