We are blessed to be in a time when we are technically so advanced that Education can be imparted to children through distance / online learning from the comfort of our homes.
There are a few best practices, when followed, will ensure benefitting maximum out of this method of learning. Let us see some of them here.
Why is Digital Learning important?
Digital learning is an instructional practice that ultimately helps students. It makes use of a broad range of technology-enhanced educational strategies. It includes blended learning, flipped learning, personalized learning, and other strategies that rely on digital tools to a small or large degree.
The answer to this question is not as obvious as you may think. It might surprise you to know that this is one of the most frequently searched questions in regard to digital learning.
The concept of digital learning is quite complex, with too many variables to adequately cover in this post. In short, digital learning can enhance learning experiences, save teachers time, enable teachers to better tailor learning to student needs, aid in tracking student progress, provide transparency into the learning process for all stakeholders, and much more.

5 Tips for Effective Distance Learning
1. Understanding the Platform/Technology
One of the most important things to remember with regards to online/distance learning is that we need to have a good amount of knowledge on the platform being used.
The technology/platform that is being used for learning, plays a key role in the over-all outcome of learning. We should take time and effort to understand all the features/options that come with the platform.
For instance, it would help greatly to have reasonable knowledge on options like sharing your screen with the teacher, use of annotations on the screen etc., in the specific platform being used.
This will ensure better utilization of the time that is spent interacting with the teachers.
The time spent to understand the features and options will prove to be an extremely useful investment with great returns.
2. Offline Activities
As much as we need to understand the features of the technology used for online learning, it is equally important to draft a clear plan on how to efficiently use the off-screen time as part of our learning schedule. For example, certain tasks like Reading Comprehension activities could be carried out by printing the passage on an A4 sheet and solving it off the grid.
This proves useful not only in terms of reducing the screen time, but also helps a great deal if the internet connectivity is not stable at your location and you face frequent network issues.
Effective offline learning coupled with online activities will enable us to get the best out of both the worlds!
3. Plan Ahead
The biggest boon of distance learning is that time management is entirely in our hands, if planned well we can spend our hours a lot more efficiently.
Though learning happens in the comforts of our homes, it is important to have a defined, standard space for the sessions, with no disturbances whatsoever.
It really helps to chart out a plan well in advance for all the sessions, so that the children have a heads up on what will be taught in the upcoming session.
This will enable them to efficiently utilize the limited “online” time with the teachers. Students would benefit greatly from good planning - in terms of coming up with the right questions and getting instant clarifications from the teachers.
After all, as the saying goes, 'Well begun is half done.'
4. Monitoring Kids’ Internet exposure
Online/distance learning involves extensive use of gadgets and the internet. The Internet can be a boon or a bane depending upon how it is being used. It would be wise to always keep track of what the children are exposed to, over the internet.
While it is really great that the children find a lot of information on the internet which adds to their knowledge and understanding, the other side of this coin is that the same internet can be a source of distraction and in some cases, harmful too.
Multiple options are available for enforcing Parental Control in internet devices. It is always prudent to restrict the access available to the children on the internet.
5. Choose your Teacher wisely
The success of an online/distance class depends highly on how effective the teacher/learning provider is. The learning provider must be adept at using this online medium to its full capacity so that the effectiveness of knowledge that is imparted is of high quality.
They should be well versed with the pros and cons of using the online medium. More importantly, their content/curriculum should be designed in such a way that the students reap maximum benefit out of the sessions. They should use a simple yet effective platform/User Interface which makes learning easy for the students.
Additionally, we also need to consciously make an effort to overcome the typical disadvantages of distance learning.
For instance, distance learning means there is no commutation to and from the educational institution, which results in limited physical activity.
It is highly imperative that the kids are physically engaged with non-screen activities for some time each day to ensure their physical fitness.
Another main disadvantage of distance learning is that there is almost zero social interaction. So we need to come up with ways to ensure that the kids are not allowed to sit idle.
We all know that an Idle Mind is a Devil’s Workshop. Having frequent conversations with the kids about what they learn and engaging them in interesting discussions on those topics is of utmost importance to retain their interest in the subject, which otherwise might be lost due to the absence of healthy discussions with the teacher and other students inside a classroom.
Online education has a plethora of benefits including saving time, money, and provides an opportunity to learn any course from any teacher across the globe. However, it does come with its set of demerits. To get the most out of it we must remember to understand the platform, choose the right teacher, and be sure to plan well. We must make the most of being present in this highly advanced technological era and learn as much as we can with all the knowledge at our fingertips.
