Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has made universities and colleges scramble to bring all courses online with little preparation or time for instructors to make the transition. The immediate and long term future of higher education is uncertain.

It is safe to assume that most if not all courses will require at least some online components. The online learning environment may feel a lot of anxiety about how best to provide their students with the learning experience they deserve.

A teacher can guide all their students through online tools and share equal guidance to each student separately. Students can even learn on their own and can do research on a particular subject. It has also made the education process instant.

Online education is a flexible instruction delivery system that encompasses any kind of learning that takes place via the internet. The quantity of distance learning and online degrees in most disciplines is large and increasing rapidly.

Those who often have weak access to education- refugees, children of the poor, residents of the rural areas, girls in socially conservative families-are now getting easy access.

Effects of Online Learning

Online classes may increase efficiency and course productivity. To supplement lectures, teachers can provide access to tools that facilitate discussion and active participation. In an online environment, teachers can reach students with different learning styles more easily.

Here are the few things that change:

  • Access
  • Efficiency
  • Social interaction
  • Costs

A few tips to get the most out of online education

  • Set a schedule
  • Organize your online and offline activities
  • Don’t wait, do your own research
  • Dig deeper
  • Enlist family and friends
  • Focus on the bigger plan

Is Online Learning the Future

To be sure, online teaching has its place, especially for students who cannot attend college, given the health risks. It's how we need to teach until there is either a cure or a vaccine for COVID-19.

The future of education is online

5 reasons why online education is the future of education:

  • It’s flexible
  • It offers a wide selection of program
  • It’s accessible
  • It allows for a customized learning experience
  • It’s more cost-effective than traditional education

Advantages of Online Education

  • Is convenient and flexible
  • Brings education right to your home
  • Provides more individual attention if required
  • Connects you to the global village

Disadvantages of online education

  • Requires good management and coordination
  • May create a sense of isolation.
  • Allows one to be more independent
  • Requires one to be an active learner
  • Gives you more freedom, which may be too much.

Online education

An online class can be as good as or even better than in-person classroom learning research has shown that students in online learning perform better than those receiving face-to-face instruction but it has to be done right.

The teacher will need to set the norm for engagement like requiring students to regularly ask questions and respond to their peers. Online courses are generally not as effective as in-person classes, but they are certainly better than no classes.

The virtual classroom cannot replace the traditional classroom because it is by its very essence or nature not completely “real”. Teaching on the internet is teaching in virtual reality.

While logistically sound taking too many online courses or having poor online instruction can be harmful to a student's future. One of the most glaring issues with online education is the lack of interpersonal communication.

A big disadvantage to middle and high school students is the lack of one on one support.

Online learning has many benefits one of which is the flexibility afforded by the virtual classroom:

  • Access to course work from anywhere at any time.
  • Combination of structure and freedom.
  • Effective time management
  • Immediate feedback on tests

Rebuild your classroom community in digital space

  • Know your students and what their limitations are in terms of technology.
  • Let the student take the initiative in designing the class format
  • Reestablish norms
  • Allow time for the student to socialize and even to be silly.
  • Develop new ways of encouraging engagement

Think about value-added technology, many technologies offer a whiteboard feature or the option to share your screen.
Arrange breakout sessions where small groups can meet virtually to discuss a text or work on a problem together, then reconvene the whole world.

Summary

I can say that online education is helpful to children, especially those that do not have access to proper education. It gives students everywhere an opportunity to take any course from anywhere in the world.

Online education provides flexibility but at the same time, it lacks social interaction. So after the crisis subsides, is it best for all students to return to the classroom, and continue the status quo? Or will we have found a better alternative?
