INTRODUCTION

How do you make sure that a good performing child is constantly motivated? This is much more difficult than motivating any other student as best performing students have their own level of confidence for different things. It is actually like nurturing a flourishing plant. If we don’t nourish it thinking that it is already growing well, the plant will eventually wither away. We can also say that it’s like any passion in our life, which fades away if we don’t put in the effort to nurture it. It takes extra effort and energy but it’s worthwhile when you see the final outcomes.

The main factor to motivate a student is a “Motivated Teacher” who believes in his/her students. He/She should think that even if a student is not able to do it at the moment, he/she will definitely work towards it and will succeed in the future. A teacher should have the passion that will drive the students to achieve more than their level best. Motivating kids to outperform themselves is challenging but not impossible. A teacher should have a contagious excitement which will further promote all the students to achieve better learning outcomes.

Here are some effective tips that can help you to motivate the best performing students:

MAKE THEM THE BOSS: GIVING STUDENTS A SENSE OF CONTROL

Yes, you have read it correctly. Encouraging them to take their own decisions like deciding upon the number of problems they will do in class or type of problems, or deciding which assignment they are going to work on that particular day. This sense of authority and power of decision making will motivate them further as it imparts a sense of control that pushes them to strive harder . Striving harder to achieve more not just quantitatively but also qualitatively .The best performing students need some extraordinary things to stay motivated as the normal things do not please them much. So,give them the bossy feeling and make them feel more confident about themselves .

CHALLENGE THEM: CHALLENGES ARE WHAT MAKE IT INTERESTING

Best performers will always look for new things as they are already doing good in what they are into, so make them face new challenges every day and just see how they get motivated and excited to complete those challenges.

MAKE THEM COMPETE, BUT IN A POSITIVE MANNER

Make your class interesting for students by involving them in some competitions and games,  giving them the opportunity to gel up with other kids. When students perform well, it gradually becomes a habit of performing extraordinarily in all tasks and giving them different platforms will keep them involved. Basically, the idea is to step away from books and keep them motivated.

MAKING THEM THEIR OWN HERO

Giving students tasks in which they can see the results of their efforts and hard work will give them a WOW feeling. By WOW feeling, I mean the feeling of “yes I did it!”, “I am good at it!”. When a student feels that he/she did some difficult exercise, it boosts their morale to great levels.

STUDENT CENTRIC CLASS

Conventional teaching methodology tends to make the students passive receptors and hinders their creativity. Students should be involved and should participate actively in classroom discussions. A teacher should strive to be a facilitator, otherwise, the students would lose interest.

DEMOCRATIC CLASS: RIGHT TO VOTE AND CHOOSE

We live in a democratic country and so do our students. They should have a sense of the voting power in a democracy. Give them the right to choose the topic or activities (not all the times, but sometimes) and make them vote for it.  Let the students decide what activity they want to do for that particular day.

RESPONSIBILITY ADDS MOTIVATION

As the famous saying goes, “Push yourself as no one else is going to do it for you”. Give good performing students a sense of responsibility by making them the class monitor for some time or making them check other student’s work. These responsibilities will add to their confidence and develops their personality.

PRAISING AND REWARDING ALWAYS BENEFIT THE STUDENTS

The ‘art of praising’ is complicated but it’s very effective when used in the right manner that it can completely transform the child the way you want. Praising students for their efforts and accomplishments can keep them motivated the entire time. Use phrases like “When the student is ready, the master appears”- Buddhist proverb. When they are appreciated, they feel rewarded for what they have done and that makes them do things more accurately and nicely.

LEAD WITH VISION

Best results are achieved when there is a goal or students know that all their efforts are driving them towards something. That’s where vision comes into the picture. A vision or goal always inspires students to rise and gives them an area for improvement. Just tell them “ Don’t stop until you are proud”.

MAKE THE ENVIRONMENT AWE-INSPIRING

Making the environment in the classroom inspiring by changing way of teaching, changing teaching materials and giving them new targets and rewarding them for accomplishments and even for efforts in a different manner and also having some fun-filled parties at  regular intervals make the students more inspired and enthusiastic to come to the class, perform well, put in more efforts and stay motivated.

CONCLUSION

It is of utmost importance to see that the students stay motivated even if they are performing well because a kid’s mental state is very dynamic. Performing well and having confidence in what they do will add to their personality but with the constant motivation, they will outshine themselves. Following the aforementioned points can make the child more confident, and the chances of him/her losing interest in things will become negligible.

Constant motivation will keep them energetic and enthusiastic for new activities and challenges and their performance will gradually improve. I know that the job of a teacher is not easy and teaching and motivating students is an art. But let’s strive to become an ‘artist’, or even better – a great artist!
