What Background Do I Need To Become A Cuemath Teacher?

Go back to  'faq'

There are two vital requirements to become a Cuemath teacher:

1. A good grasp of math concepts taught till high school, and
2. Empathy towards children

Cuemath checks for both these attributes. Then teachers are trained in the Cuemath Method and certified before they start their center.

After certification, Cuemath provides weekly reports and insights about all students to the teacher. These insights enable teachers to take specific actions to ensure learning outcomes.

OUR TEACHERS COME FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, THERE IS NO SET PATTERN

While these two requirements are common, out community of 5000 teachers across the country otherwise is made up of rich and diverse educational and professional backgrounds.

And,

1. 80% have worked previously before becoming a Cuemath teacher
2. Over 65% of our teachers have worked in large companies and MNCs

We have teachers who have been VPs at large MNC banks and also teachers for whom this is the first role. Great teachers come from diverse backgrounds!

YOU DON’T NEED PRIOR TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As you can see, many Cuemath teachers have no prior teaching experience. You do not need to teaching experience to be a Cuemath Teacher. As long as you have the basic ability to deal with children, Cuemath will train, test and certify for:

1. Math ability
2. High level of empathy with children.

At Cuemath, we believe that knowing math is not enough to teach math to children, you must also have an ability to work well with children and to motivate them to learn. These attributes along with Cuemath’s weekly student progress reports ensure that teachers deliver learning outcomes consistently.

YOU’LL BE TRAINED AND CERTIFIED BEFORE STARTING CLASSES

Because of  the diverse backgrounds that prospective teachers come from, Cuemath puts teachers through a training and certification program. This consists of

1. Online courses : Many prospective teachers may not be able to regularly travel for an offline course, a major part of the training is done online.
2. In-person certification : At the end of the course, there are one or two days of in-person training sessions to assess learning.
3. Continued Training : Post the certification there is continued training, that is both offline and online. Based on learning outcomes a teacher may be required to undergo a specific set of courses.

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE CERTIFICATION TRAINING:

1. Math Knowledge : Courses to build and refresh Math knowledge
2. Cuemath Curriculum : How the curriculum is designed and methods to personalize for students.
3. Cuemath Method : Helping students learn actively by reasoning and problem-solving, rather than through blackboard lectures or videos.
4. Engagement : How to build student engagement, specifically
      a. How to plan for a classes
      b. What is the right way to respond to children, to build confidence & increase effort
      c. How to accelerate learning through various strategies, what works, What does not
      d. How to cue answers rather than simply giving them away
      e. How to motivate students through intrinsic as well as extrinsic rewards

The aim of the training is to prepare teachers to start their Cuemath center, confidently take their first Cuemath class, and most importantly ensure learning outcomes for all students.

YOU’LL HAVE A DEDICATED TRAINING TEAM TO HELP YOU

Each of our city teams have a dedicated training team. In addition they are helped by existing Cuemath teachers who help train and hand hold the new teachers. These experienced teachers are appropriately called buddies.

CAN YOU CUE STUDENTS, INSTEAD OF GIVING THE ANSWER AWAY?

A key tenet in our philosophy is to never tell, but only Cue.

We are called Cuemath – because of the emphasis we place on Cue-ing. Cue-ing is the process of asking questions to guide the student to self discovery. When the student self discovers the answers they understand better and remember for longer. This is very different from the broadcast learning method in which a teacher delivers lectures.

Cue-ing works better because the student is more engaged and learns better because they use reasoning to arrive at an answer not just tactics or apply formulae.  When the student self discovers the answers they understand better and remember for longer.

CAN YOU FACILITATE SELF DISCOVERY?

1 Active learning : At Cuemath the students learn by doing. The Cuemath method puts a student in charge of their own learning (also referred to as the active learning philosophy). Often a Cuemath teacher is expected to play the role of a facilitator, facilitating self discovery, rather than a conventional teacher who delivers a lecture in class.
2 More engaged : The Cuemath learning resources which include Workbooks, Math Box activities and Tab exercises are designed appropriately by age groups, so that the children can themselves use it. This allows the child to be in greater control of their own learning and importantly more engaged in class.
3 Double the practice : Because the student is more engaged, typically a child at Cuemath will have double the practice one can expect at school in the time span of a year. For a newly enrolled student the pace picks up in the first few months and reaches a sustained high after 6 to 9 months in class.

CAN YOU GIVE CHILDREN YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION? NO ADMIN WORK REQUIRED

All students work on their own set of workbooks that Cuemath provides. The teachers have an app called the Cueteacher app, which recommends:

1 The appropriate workbooks
2 Sets up assessments and grades them
3 Tracks student performance in each class and send a weekly progress report
4 Recommends next steps every week to ensure learning outcomes.

Thus teachers don’t have to make lesson plans nor do they have to come up with their own learning plan, but they can input to change the plan, basis observations.

All the admin work is taken care of by the app. This allows the teacher to give all the time to help students make progress. This optimal time utilization allows for personalized attention, an  important aspect to drive accelerated learning outcomes.

The app also tracks student performance in each class and send a weekly progress report to the teacher. This report has insights as well as next steps that a teacher must take to ensure learning outcomes.

EXPERIENCED “BUDDY” TEACHERS WILL HANDHOLD YOU THROUGH YOUR TEACHING JOURNEY

In addition, to help new teachers, some of the older and more experienced teachers mentor the new teachers. Each new teacher is assigned a mentor teacher who is called a “buddy teacher”. The buddy teacher ensures that the first few classes run smoothly and new teachers are comfortable implementing all the learning strategies.

THUS IN SUMMARY,

1 Cuemath teachers come from a diverse background.
