"You spend a third of your life sleeping!" It sounds alarming — but is the number even right, and does it actually support the conclusion? Kid does the math to check both.
The Experience
Kid is hit with the claim that people spend a third of their life sleeping and feels the alarm — then checks the number: 8 hours ÷ 24 hours really is 1/3 for an adult, and for a kid sleeping 10 hours it's even more, almost half the day.
Next comes the sanity check on the framing itself: is sleep actually "wasted" time? Exploring what sleep deprivation does to focus, memory, and growth shows the claim used a real number to push a misleading conclusion.
The pattern is then tested on a second claim — "You spend 5 years of your life waiting in lines!" — which works out to about 1.5 hours a day over 80 years, a number the kid checks against their own estimated daily wait time.
