Samarth Earned An AMC Distinction In Year 6

Samarth started Cuemath in 2019, when he was in Prep and a long way from anything that looked like a maths paper. His first classes included math building activities, games, visual puzzles, and objects he could move around on the Cueboard, the interactive whiteboard on the Cuemath platform that tutors use to make an idea something you handle rather than something you are told. His tutor, Meghna Vyas, has taught him ever since, through weekly online math tutoring.

An AMC Distinction Puts A Student In The Top 20%

The Australian Mathematics Competition is run by the Australian Maths Trust and sat by students across the country each year. It is not a syllabus test. The problems are unfamiliar by design, and they reward working out what kind of problem you are looking at before you reach for a method. A Distinction is awarded to roughly the top 20% of entrants in a student's year level and region.

He Took The Distinction And His School's Maths Prize

In 2025 Samarth sat the AMC in the Upper Primary Division and came away with a Distinction Award. The same year, his school gave him its prize for excellence in mathematics, chosen from across the whole year level.

Math Activities Came First, Past Papers Came Later

Nothing about the early years was competition preparation. Meghna built the concepts with manipulatives on the Cueboard and puzzle cards, because a child in Prep learns what a number is by moving things, not by being shown a rule. The competition work started only once Samarth wanted it. When he did, Meghna began working through past papers with him, question by question, including the long ones at the end of the paper that most entrants never reach.

"He joined in 2019, when he was in Prep. So from the beginning we started with math building activities. I started with math games and visual puzzles with him initially. Building math concepts using math manipulatives on the Cueboard, and puzzle cards, helped a lot.

He started taking part in AMC and Math Kangaroo, so I also started solving past papers for him. He is already doing algebra and other topics from Year 8."

Seeing Math in Action Is What Being MathFit Looks Like

The math building activities did their real work years later. An AMC paper hands a student a problem with no syllabus behind it and no worked example to copy, which is close to unbearable if maths has only ever been a set of instructions to follow. For Samarth, it is the same thing he has been doing since Prep. That is what being MathFit looks like: stepping up to a challenge with confidence, knowing you have the foundational tools to solve it.
