The 5-Star Trap

ModeChoicesGradesGrades 4-8

We shop by the star rating — the higher, the better. But is a high rating enough to trust?

Concept

A 4.9-star restaurant with 3 reviews vs. a 4.2-star with 800 reviews — which do you trust? Kid starts by always picking the higher-rated option, and gets burned.

The Experience

Kid is shown pairs of restaurants, products, or apps with a star rating and a review count, and picks which one they'd choose — almost always going with the higher number.

After five picks, the reveal: the options with very few reviews were wildly inconsistent — some amazing, some terrible — and the high average was really just luck on a tiny sample.

A coin-flip simulation drives the point home: flip a coin 5 times and you might get 80% heads; flip it 500 times and it settles near 50%. Star ratings work the same way — 3 reviews can easily average 4.9 by chance, while 800 reviews give a stable, trustworthy number.

The final challenge hands the kid 10 options with different ratings and review counts and asks them to rank by actual trustworthiness — not by stars alone.

What Math Does The Kid Do?

  • Calculates an average rating from raw review scores (add and divide).
  • Compares how one new fake review shifts a small sample versus a large one.
  • Runs coin-flip simulations to see how sample size affects reliability.
  • Builds a personal rule for how many reviews it takes before a rating can be trusted.

Why This Matters

A 5-star rating with 3 reviews won't fool you again — you'll check the review count first, because you've seen how easily a tiny sample gets lucky.
