NAPLAN Numeracy Strong: Parth Starts the Hard Questions on His Own

Parth sat his first Cuemath class in March 2026. His Coach, Yamini Aravindhan, spent those months giving him room to think rather than answers, and his NAPLAN numeracy result came back Strong. What his parents noticed first was that he had stopped giving up.

In March this year Parth sat down for his first Cuemath class. By NAPLAN season his parents had stopped wondering whether he would attempt the hard questions.

His numeracy result came back Strong, the band that says a student has met the challenging expectation set for their year. Yamini Aravindhan has taught him since that first class in March, in weekly online maths tutoring sessions at Cuemath.

Meet Parth

  • Country: Australia
  • Coach: Yamini Aravindhan
  • With Cuemath Since: March 2026
  • NAPLAN Numeracy (2026): Strong

His parents were not chasing a band on a report. What they wanted was for him to keep going when a question looked unfamiliar. Plenty of students can do the maths they have been taught and still stop short on a problem that is worded a little differently. They have learned to wait for the method instead of looking for one.

That habit is easy to build by accident. A child gets stuck, a parent steps in to move the evening along, and the child learns that being stuck is someone else's problem to fix. Changing it means leaving the quiet a little longer than feels comfortable.

"I'm very happy to see Parth's performance in his NAPLAN assessment. His result reflects the effort he has been putting into his learning and the progress he has made over time. It is especially encouraging to see his understanding and problem-solving skills reflected in his performance. As his teacher, it is rewarding to see his confidence in Mathematics growing steadily. Well done, Parth! Keep up the great work!"

~ Yamini Aravindhan, Cuemath Coach

Yamini did exactly that. Her sessions give Parth room to think before she says anything, and the questions he gets back are the kind that send him to the step he skipped rather than to the answer. Mistakes are allowed to stand long enough to be useful. His parents describe the result in the language of independence, and it shows up as a small, specific change: he now explains his thinking out loud, and he keeps going when the answer does not arrive straight away.

"Parth began his online Cuemath journey in March 2026. Since then, it has been lovely to see his confidence and curiosity in maths grow. He is becoming more willing to try unfamiliar problems, explain his thinking and keep going when an answer does not come easily. As parents, we are most proud of his growing independence and perseverance. Seeing him work through a challenge and feel proud when he understands it is especially rewarding."

"Yamini's patient guidance and encouragement have helped make his classes a positive learning experience. By giving him space to think, ask questions and learn from mistakes, she has supported his understanding and confidence. Thank you, Yamini and Cuemath, for being part of Parth's journey. We look forward to seeing him continue to learn, grow and enjoy discovering what he can achieve."

~ Parth's Parents

NAPLAN is the national assessment Australian students sit each year in March, and numeracy results are reported in four proficiency levels. Strong is the second from the top, and it means a child has met the challenging but reasonable expectation for their year level. It is a broad paper rather than a single topic, so it rewards a student who can decide what a question is asking before working out how to answer it. That is precisely the habit Parth spent the year building.

Eight months is not long to change what a child does in the first ten seconds of a hard question. Parth now begins an unfamiliar problem without being shown how, says his thinking out loud while he works, and keeps going when the answer does not come easily. Those three together make a MathFit student. Next year's band will replace this one. The habits underneath it will still be there.
