About AASA
Arizona's Academic Standards Assessment (AASA) is Arizona's statewide achievement test, administered by the Arizona Department of Education to all public school students in grades 3 through 8, in English language arts (reading and writing) and mathematics. It replaced the earlier AzMERIT and AzM2 tests starting in the 2022-23 school year, with updated alignment to Arizona's academic standards. Third graders also complete an Oral Reading Fluency check as part of the ELA portion. Like other state assessments, AASA isn't something students study for the way they would for a class exam; it's given each spring to measure how well students are mastering Arizona's own grade-level standards, and results feed into school and district accountability and help identify students who need additional support.
AASA is administered by computer as the default mode and includes a mix of traditional multiple choice and multi-select questions along with technology-enhanced item types such as drag-and-drop, equation building, inline choice, hot text, and fill-in responses. It is given once a year in the spring across multiple testing sessions in both ELA and math. Students receive a scale score that places them into one of four performance levels: Level 1 (Minimally Proficient), Level 2 (Partially Proficient), Level 3 (Proficient), and Level 4 (Highly Proficient). The specific score ranges for each level vary by grade and subject. Scoring at Level 3 or 4 generally indicates a student is on track for the next grade level, while Level 1 or 2 signals a need for additional academic support.
Since AASA is aligned specifically to Arizona's own academic standards rather than a generic curriculum, the strongest preparation is consistent, grade-level classroom work in reading, writing, and math throughout the year. Because the test is computer-based and timed, students benefit from taking official sample or practice tests on the same type of device they'll use on test day, so unfamiliar tools like drag-and-drop and equation builders don't slow them down. Since it's timed, practicing steady pacing under time pressure is a genuinely useful skill here, not just generic test advice. Preparation is best spread over the weeks and months leading up to the spring testing window rather than crammed at the last minute.
