About AMC 8
The AMC 8 is a math competition for students in grade 8 and below (with a maximum age limit of under 15.5 years on competition day), run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the same organization behind the well-known AMC 10 and AMC 12 competitions for older students. It's typically many students' first serious encounter with competition mathematics. Students don't register individually. Instead, they take the AMC 8 through their school, learning center, or a local test site that has registered as an official test center with the MAA. Students take part for recognition and enrichment rather than admissions: strong performers earn Honor Roll or Distinguished Honor Roll status, and the AMC 8 also serves as an on-ramp to the AMC 10 in later years, which is how students eventually work toward AIME and, ultimately, USAMO qualification. The AMC 8 alone doesn't qualify a student for AIME, only AMC 10/12 scores do.
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, multiple-choice competition with a 40-minute time limit, held annually during a designated week in January. Depending on the school or test center, it can be taken on paper or digitally, since the MAA now supports both formats. Scoring is straightforward: 1 point for each correct answer, 0 points for a wrong or blank answer, with no penalty for guessing, so there's no reason to leave a question unanswered if time allows. The maximum possible score is 25. Top performers are recognized with Honor Roll (roughly the top 5% of that year's test-takers) and Distinguished Honor Roll, sometimes shortened to DHR (roughly the top 1%), though the exact score cutoff for each shifts slightly year to year depending on how the whole pool performs. Students may only take the AMC 8 once per year.
The AMC 8 covers middle-school-level math, but the questions are designed to test reasoning under time pressure rather than raw content knowledge. Core topic areas include counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry (including the Pythagorean theorem), spatial visualization, interpreting graphs and tables, and some early algebra such as linear and quadratic patterns showing up in the later, harder questions. Because it's timed at under 2 minutes per question on average, the biggest preparation win is practicing with past official AMC 8 papers (widely available and free) under real time constraints, not just working problems untimed. Students who are already comfortable with school math but haven't seen competition-style problems typically benefit from a few months of targeted practice, working through past papers, reviewing wrong answers carefully, and learning common problem-solving techniques (like working backward from answer choices, or looking for patterns instead of brute-forcing algebra). A steady one-to-two-month runway before the January test date, rather than a last-minute cram, tends to work best.
