About CogAT
CogAT is a cognitive ability (reasoning) test published by Riverside Insights, given to groups of students from kindergarten through grade 12 (ages roughly 5 to 18, across ten test levels). Unlike MAP, STAAR, or NJSLA, CogAT is not an achievement test, it doesn't measure what a student has learned in school. Instead, it estimates a student's ability to reason and solve unfamiliar problems using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (visual/spatial) content. Its most common use in U.S. schools is as a screening tool for gifted and talented program identification, since it can surface strong reasoning ability in students whose classroom grades or achievement scores don't necessarily reflect it. Some schools also use CogAT results alongside achievement data to inform broader instructional planning. It is administered at a district's or school's discretion, not required by any state or federal mandate.
CogAT is organized into three batteries, each covering a different type of reasoning: Verbal (analogies, sentence completion, classification), Quantitative (number analogies, number puzzles, number series), and Nonverbal (figure matrices, paper folding, figure classification). For the youngest test-takers (kindergarten through grade 2), all three batteries are picture-based and untimed. From grade 3 up, each battery is timed, with about 10 minutes per subtest, and the full test runs roughly 90 to 120 minutes depending on the level, with 118 to 176 total questions across the grade range. Some schools use a shorter Screening Form that includes only the analogy-type subtest from each battery. Results are reported as a Standard Age Score (SAS, with a mean of 100), a percentile rank comparing the student to same-age peers nationally, and a stanine (a 1-9 band), along with separate scores for each of the three batteries plus an overall composite.
Because CogAT measures reasoning ability rather than curriculum content, traditional studying (memorizing facts or formulas) doesn't help and isn't the point. What genuinely helps is familiarity with the question formats and thinking patterns the test uses, since a child who has simply never seen a picture-analogy or figure-matrix question before can underperform purely from unfamiliarity, not lack of ability. Age-appropriate practice with pattern recognition, spatial puzzles (mental rotation, paper folding), number sequences, and verbal analogy or classification games builds the specific skills tested. Because CogAT is designed to measure a fairly stable underlying ability, broader, ongoing enrichment (puzzles, logic games, encouraging kids to explain their reasoning) has more lasting value than last-minute drilling, though brief format familiarization in the weeks before the test is reasonable to reduce anxiety and unfamiliarity as confounding factors.
