About SAT Math
The SAT is a standardized college admissions test administered by the College Board and taken by high school students across the U.S. as part of undergraduate applications. Since March 2024, it's given exclusively in digital form through the College Board's own Bluebook testing app, having fully replaced the older paper-and-pencil version. The test has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, and most students take it during 11th or 12th grade, though some take it earlier for practice or talent-search programs. Colleges weigh SAT scores alongside GPA, course rigor, extracurriculars, and essays; many schools have moved to test-optional admissions in recent years, but a strong score can still meaningfully support an application, especially for merit scholarships. Unlike the ACT, the digital SAT is section-adaptive: how a student performs on a section's first module determines the difficulty of its second module, which affects the score ceiling available to them.
The digital SAT Math section is split into two 22-question modules of 35 minutes each, for 44 questions and 70 minutes total. It's section-adaptive: every student gets a first module of mixed difficulty, and performance on it determines whether the second module leans easier or harder, which in turn affects the range of scores still reachable. About 75% of questions are multiple-choice with four answer options, and the rest are student-produced response ("grid-in") questions where students type in a numeric answer instead of choosing one; there's no penalty for guessing on either type. A significant change from the old paper SAT is that a calculator, either the built-in Desmos graphing calculator inside Bluebook or an approved handheld calculator, is allowed for the entire Math section, not just part of it. Math questions are drawn from four content domains, Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry, and scores are reported on a 200-800 scale for Math, combined with a 200-800 Reading and Writing score for a total composite between 400 and 1600.
Because the digital SAT is adaptive, the biggest lever for a strong Math score isn't grinding every topic equally, it's building enough consistent accuracy on module 1 to unlock the higher-scoring, harder version of module 2. Content-wise, Algebra and Advanced Math together account for well over half of all Math questions (linear equations, systems, functions, and quadratics show up constantly), with Problem-Solving and Data Analysis and Geometry and Trigonometry making up the rest. Since the whole section allows a calculator, practicing efficient calculator use, including the built-in Desmos tool, which most students haven't used before test day, is worth real practice time rather than being assumed to be easy. Full-length, timed practice tests, ideally through the College Board's own Bluebook app so students get used to the actual interface, on-screen calculator, and adaptive pacing, tend to be far more useful than isolated topic drills once the fundamentals are solid. Most students benefit from a few months of steady prep, working through official practice tests and reviewing every missed question for the underlying concept rather than just the right answer, instead of a short cram, since the SAT rewards reliable execution across many topics more than any single trick.
