# A swimming pool is 200 m by 50 m and has an average depth of 2 m. By the end of a summer day, the water level drops by 2 cm. How many cubic metres of water is lost on the day?

**Solution:**

The Volume of water in the swimming pool = Length × Breadth × Depth

= 200 × 50 × 2 m³

= 20,000m³

By the end of the summer day the depth of the water reduces by 2cm

The depth gets reduced to (2 - 0.02) m = 1.98 m

Volume of water in the swimming pool by the end of the day = 200 × 50 × 1.98 m³ = 19,800m³

Volume of water lost = 20,000m³ - 19800m³ = 200m³

**✦ Try This:** A swimming pool is 100 m by 25 m and has an average depth of 2 m. By the end of a summer day, the water level drops by 2.5 cm. How many cubic metres of water is lost on the day?

The Volume of water in the swimming pool = Length × Breadth × Depth

= 100 × 25 × 2 m³

= 5000 m³

By the end of the summer day the depth of the water reduces by 2cm

The depth gets reduced to (2 - 0.025) m = 1.975 m

Volume of water in the swimming pool by the end of the day = 100 × 25 × 1.975 m³ = 4937.5m³

Volume of water lost = 5000m³ - 4937.50m³ = 62.5m³
