Find the values of x and y if a and b are in inverse proportion:
a. 12 x 8
b. 30 5 y
Solution:
If a and b are in inverse proportion then we can state:
a ∝ 1/b
ab = k
Where k = positive constant
Therefore we can write:
12 × 30 = (x) × 5 = 8 × y
5x = 8y = 360
Hence,
y = 360/8 = 45
x = 360/5 = 72
✦ Try This: Find the values of x and y if a and b are in inverse proportion: a. 15 x 12, b. 24 3 y
If a and b are in inverse proportion then we can state:
a ∝ 1/b
ab = k
Where k = positive constant
Therefore we can write:
15 × 24 = (x) × 3 = 12 × y
3x = 12y = 3600
Hence,
y = 360/12 = 30
x = 360/3 = 120
