Algebra 1 in 8th Grade: What Each District's Rule Decides

In 10 of the 14 districts we keep on file, the district decides the 8th grade Algebra 1 seat in 7th grade or earlier. The door is either a gate the district reads in 7th grade or a track the child entered in an earlier grade.

In Fremont Unified, Evergreen, and Irvine, the main door is at the end of 6th grade, so a 6th grader's door is this school year. Seven of the 14 post a second chance, and five of those name a month. For a child who is ahead before then, what 13 districts have written about the elementary classroom, and the grade-skip rules with their numbers, are on our page on when math class is too easy.

First, find your district's row in the table below and open the linked page. Write down the measure the door reads and the month of the second chance. Our page on how to read math placement rules shows how to read a rule you have not seen before.

Looking for what Algebra 1 covers, not who gets in? Our page on what 8th grade math teaches has that.

What the seat decides

Algebra 1 in 8th grade puts Geometry in 9th in the districts that name their courses that way, and Math 2 in an integrated sequence such as Evergreen's. Integrated courses, named Math I, Math II, and so on, mix algebra, geometry, and statistics and revisit them every year. Lexington uses the names Math 1 and Math 2 differently: its Math 1 CP is an algebra course and Math 2 CP1 covers geometry topics.

San Jose Unified's own pathway table shows where Algebra 1 in 8th grade leads. A child who takes it goes through Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus to an Advanced Placement (AP) course in 12th grade: "AP Calculus or AP Statistics." A child who takes Math 8 in 8th grade reaches Pre-Calculus in 12th. Sunnyvale's presentation for families draws the same chain into the Fremont Union High School District (the high school district Sunnyvale's students go on to, not Fremont Unified). Algebra 1 in 8th reaches AP Calculus in 12th, and Algebra 1 plus Geometry in 8th reaches it in 11th.

In at least four districts (San Jose Unified, Fairfax County, Forsyth County, and Cupertino Union) it is also a high school course. Fremont Unified's 2026-27 letter says the opposite case plainly: "Students who do not take accelerated math are NOT behind their peers." Both of its pathways lead to eligibility for the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems.

The 14 districts

Three districts post no second chance at 8th grade, three need none, and one is a high school district.

Two test names in the table: an NWEA RIT score is a score on the scale of the MAP test, and the MDTP is the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project test, a readiness test.

We read each district's page between late August and mid-October 2026. New to a district? See the FAQ below.

The dates are the ones each district had posted when we read its page. Some are 2026 dates that have passed. The district's letter for the coming cycle gives the new dates. Fremont's 2026-27 placement letter, for example, was dated January 2026.

Three of our live pages hold the detail behind these rows: Fremont's door, Plano's three doors, and Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and San Jose side by side. Fairfax County's advanced academics are on our Fairfax page and Frisco's gifted route on our Frisco page.

Where Cuemath fits

Cuemath is live, one-on-one online math tutoring. If the question is whether your child is ready for the accelerated class, the evaluation shows where the gaps are, in your child's own work. It is not a door into any course. The doors above run on the district's own measures.

See where your child stands before the door opens

A free Cuemath MathFit evaluation, our skills-and-gaps check, is a live, one-on-one session that shows where your child is solid and where a gap sits, in your child's own work. No credit card, and the report is yours either way.

FAQs

Can an outside class or a summer program get my child into Algebra 1 in 8th grade?

Not in San Jose Unified or Evergreen. San Jose's criteria document says, "Middle school students may not take a course outside of San José Unified to accelerate their middle school math placement." Evergreen's FAQ says summer programs do not qualify a student to skip.

Frisco and Round Rock allow an outside test, not an outside class. Frisco's board allows a Credit by Exam Without Prior Instruction taken outside the district, with counselor approval. Round Rock's catalog lets parents pay the University of Texas High School to give the exam outside the district's test dates. San Mateo Union accepts a transcript from a WASC-accredited institution for 9th grade placement. It uses outside courses for placement only; they do not appear on its transcripts.

Does Algebra 1 in 8th grade count as a high school course?

Yes, where the district says so. San Jose Unified: students "earn high school credit and a transcribed grade when taken in middle school." Fairfax County: "Algebra 1 Honors is a high school credit course with an additional 0.5 weight. It is reported on a student's high school transcript." DeSana Middle School in Forsyth County calls it "Algebra 1 which is a high school course." Cupertino Union adds the condition: a high-school-level course needs a C- or better to count.

What is the placement test like?

The pages say little, and each says something different. Sunnyvale releases no sample questions for its placement assessments. In Irvine, the classroom teacher gives the end-of-course assessment during a regular class period. Evergreen's May test is a diagnostic called the Algebra 1/Integrated Math 1 Readiness Test, or MDTP. Palo Alto's validation test is one paper-and-pencil test. What a percentile on these tests means is on our percentile page, and what the state test decides is on our CAASPP page.

Can my child take Algebra 1 in 7th grade instead?

Yes, in six of the 14 districts on file. Cupertino Union places a 7th grader in Algebra 1 at an NWEA RIT of 250 or higher, 83.3% or higher on the Algebra readiness test, and a first-semester grade of B+ or higher. San Jose Unified places a 7th grader directly in Algebra 1 at 6 or more points. In Palo Alto, a 6th grader who passes the grade 7 validation test takes Algebra 1 as a 7th grader, with the 8th graders. In 2026, Palo Alto emailed registration information on January 29, families registered by February 26, and the test for rising 7th graders was March 23. Spring 2027 registration opens in early 2027.

Outside California, Fairfax County lets students in Math 6 Advanced enroll in Algebra 1 Honors as 7th graders. Plano's Math Rocks students take Algebra I Honors in 7th grade. Round Rock's catalog lists Algebra I in grade 7 or 8.

We are moving into the district this summer. Is the door closed?

Not always. In Fairfax County any 8th grader may enroll, and Sunnyvale's placement assessment is open to all students. Five more districts post a route for a child who is new or who missed the spring test, though Forsyth County's summer placement test is for entry into 6th grade only. Irvine: students new to the district entering 7th or 8th grade may take the summer math tests. Palo Alto: a Fall Validation Test for students who started school on February 26, 2026, or later. Frisco: contact the campus counselor about a Credit by Exam before the first day of school. San Jose Unified: a child without a spring i-Ready score can take it in the summer before 6th grade or before 7th grade.

If my child gets in and it is too hard, can we move back?

Only with a condition, where the pages say anything. Evergreen lets parents keep an eligible child in the traditional sequence from the start. In Irvine, a placement won on appeal needs a B or better at the first grading period, or the child returns to the recommended course. Burlingame High School (a San Mateo Union school) warns that "Space to move to the Geometry course cannot be guaranteed if a student requests to leave the Compressed course." Cupertino Union's page says a high-school-level course below a C- must be taken again.

My child missed the 7th grade door. Is 9th grade too late to reach calculus?

Not in the districts that post a later second chance. San Jose Unified's Ramp Up to Geometry runs the summer between 8th and 9th grade, by invitation, for a child who meets all its criteria. Completing it earns high school credit for Algebra 1 and puts the child on the sequence that reaches AP Calculus or AP Statistics in 12th grade. San Mateo Union offers its Geometry Summer Acceleration the summer after 9th grade to students who meet its criteria. In Lexington, every 9th grade course stays open whatever the 8th grade placement, and Math 1 CP, its 9th grade course, is an algebra course.
