What Is a MathFit Evaluation? The 55 Minutes, Explained

You want to know what this session is before you give an hour of your evening to it. Fair. Here's the whole thing, plainly.

A MathFit evaluation is a 55-minute live online session with Cuemath, an online 1:1 math tutoring program for kindergarten through grade 12. Your child does real math with a MathFit Specialist while the Specialist reads how your child thinks, and you sit in and watch: every screen in the session is built for you to see. You leave with three things: the MathFit Report, a personalized 6-month learning plan, and milestones for month three of that plan. The evaluation is free in 2026, and everything you leave with is yours whether or not you go any further with us.

Why give it the hour? Because a score, a MAP RIT number or an i-Ready level, tells you what your child got right. It doesn't tell you why the misses happened, or whether a right answer came from understanding or from memorized steps. Watching a child reason does. That's the one thing this session is for.

What happens in the session

It starts with talk, not math. After a short welcome, the next 10 minutes or so go to a structured conversation: your child's school and curriculum, their grade, your goals, what your child is like, and anything else you want noted. This isn't small talk. A child who hasn't warmed up gives one-word answers, and one-word answers hide everything the session is meant to show. We also personalize everything that follows from this conversation, so name what you actually want, right at the start.

Then comes the evaluation itself: about 30 minutes, 15 questions, four sections. Each section measures one of the four dimensions your child's Report will score, and we call them FUAR for short: Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning.

• Fluency. Your child answers six quick math-fact questions out loud, on a 30-second timer. It's the only timed part of the session. The question underneath: how automatic is the arithmetic they already know?
• Understanding. The Specialist works through three questions with your child as a dialogue. Getting the answer isn't the point; the Specialist notes how far your child gets, from solving and explaining it alone to not solving it at all.
• Application. Three word problems. The final answer doesn't matter here either; the Specialist scores whether your child can turn a real situation into a plan.
• Reasoning. Three puzzles with no formula to fall back on, to show how your child attacks a problem they've never seen. This dimension counts most toward the overall score, at 30%.

Through all of it, the Specialist asks, probes, and waits. We train Specialists only to diagnose, and they don't teach during the session. That's what makes this different from a trial class: a trial class teaches your child, while this session shows you how your child thinks. We call it a dialogue rather than a test, and you watch the whole thing live.

That watching separates children who carry the same score. One child knows the concept but second-guesses her answers; she needs encouragement, not harder material. Another keeps up with this year's homework on top of a gap in last year's fundamentals, and needs the gap found first. Telling them apart is the work of the session.

What you take away: the MathFit Report

The Specialist scores the session in front of you, as soon as the four sections are done. The Report holds an overall MathFit score out of 100 and a score on each of the four dimensions, each explained in plain language.

It also gets specific. In a sample Report from a second grader's session, each dimension score carries a reading against grade level. The insights name what the child handled well and where they got stuck. The recommendations open with the parent's stated goal, quoted verbatim, and each pairs an academic push with a practical move for home.

We email you the same Report within three hours. The 6-month learning plan and its month-three milestones come to you as well. And the Report's fine print says what it is: a snapshot of a single evaluation, not a standardized test. Whatever you decide afterward, you leave knowing more about how your child does math than a score sheet ever showed you.

What it decides

The evaluation settles two things: where your child stands, dimension by dimension, and what the right starting point would be if you choose to go on. Going on, for us, means a personalized 1:1 program with a dedicated coach.

One note about people, because it matters. The MathFit Specialist's job is the evaluation, building the picture. Who coaches an ongoing program is a separate question, settled when you enroll. So judge the session as a picture of your child, not as an audition for one person.

What it doesn't commit you to

The program. The session ends with the choice on screen: reserve class times, or take the Report home and decide later.
