Year 3 Maths Stanine 9: Lohas Learned the Why Behind Numbers He Already Knew

By the time Lohas started with Cuemath, he already knew his numbers cold. What his parents could not tell from the outside was whether he understood them.

His school has now answered that question. On his Year 3 Term 2 report, Lohas scored a stanine 9 in PAT Mathematics, the top band in New Zealand's national assessment, and his teacher marked his overall maths progress as Exceeding. Nivedita has been his Cuemath Coach through every week of online maths tutoring that led there.

When Lohas started, he already knew his numbers. He could recall a fact quickly and say it with certainty. What was not yet there was the understanding underneath it. Ask him why an answer worked, or change the shape of a question slightly, and the certainty went quiet. His basic calculations were not yet as steady as his recall. The facts were in place, and the connections between them were still being built.

That is a familiar picture for parents of a Year 3 child. The homework looks fine. The number facts are memorised. But you cannot tell from the outside whether your child understands the maths or has simply learned what the right answer looks like, and the difference only shows up later, when the questions stop matching the pattern. His parents wanted two things for him: confidence, and a better way of approaching a problem he had not seen before.

Nivedita's sessions were built around his pace. She introduced each new concept through targeted practice in a relaxed, playful setting, so that Lohas met the idea before he was asked to be fast with it. She adapted when he raced ahead and slowed down when a foundation needed more time. The result is a child who likes to work on his own. Nivedita gives him room to try a new question before she steps in, and he takes it, working through the problem independently and checking in only when he wants to. Nivedita says his calculation skills have developed exceptionally well, and he now picks up new concepts very quickly. The energy he brings to class is his own.

The school report tells the same story in its own language. The Progressive Achievement Tests, or PATs, are New Zealand's national standardised assessments, developed by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research. PAT Mathematics covers number, algebra, measurement, geometry and statistics, and results are reported as stanines that compare a child with students of the same age across the country. Stanine 9 is the highest of the nine bands, roughly the top four percent nationally. Alongside it, his teacher rated him Exceeding in Number, Algebra and Measurement, describing a student who understands tricky ideas, links what he learns in one area to another, and explains his thinking clearly. For a boy who started with the facts and not yet the reasons, that last line is the one that matters. Other Cuemath students in this part of the world have made the same turn. Dhruva earned a Fielder Award for confidence in Year 3, and Paavni won her school's Excellence in Effort Award in maths in Year 4.

Lohas still knows his numbers. The difference is that he now knows what to do with them when the question is new, and he trusts himself to start without waiting for help. A MathFit child looks like that in Year 3: fluent and curious at the same time, and unafraid of a problem he has not met. That balance is easiest to build in the early years, when the facts are still few and the habits around them are just forming.
