Year 6 Maths A+ and Exceeding: The Year Oscar Started Asking Questions
Oscar used to keep his questions to himself and avoid anything that looked hard. Eighteen months with his Cuemath Coach, Pooja Gupta, turned that around, and his end-of-course result came back an A+ with Exceeding on every criterion.
A year and a half ago, Oscar kept his questions to himself. His Coach now has to keep up with how many of them there are.
His end-of-course result came back an A+, and his Coach reports an Exceeding rating on every evaluation criterion for the year. Pooja Gupta has taught him in weekly online maths tutoring with Cuemath since he joined eighteen months ago.
Meet Oscar
- Grade: Year 6
- Country: Australia
- Coach: Pooja Gupta
- With Cuemath For: About 18 months
- End-of-Course Result: A+, with Exceeding on every evaluation criterion
A child who does not ask questions is easy to miss. Nothing looks wrong. The work gets handed in, the behaviour is fine, and the only sign is that the hard parts quietly get avoided rather than attempted. Early on, Oscar did his thinking privately. The questions were there, they just stayed in his head.
For a parent that is a hard thing to act on, because there is nothing to point at. You cannot see the questions a child decides not to ask. What you can see, eventually, is a child who has stopped volunteering for anything unfamiliar, and by then the habit has had a year to set.
"When Oscar first joined my class a year and a half ago, he was a little shy, hesitant to ask questions, and easily intimidated by difficult concepts. However, his transformation since then has been truly remarkable. Today, I am overjoyed to see how confident and open he has become with me. Instead of shying away from difficulties, he now enthusiastically tackles challenging math problems and genuinely looks forward to exploring brand-new topics. This fantastic new attitude toward mathematics has led Oscar to achieve an 'Exceeding' rating across every single evaluation criterion this past year. I absolutely love his newfound confidence and positive mindset, and I could not be prouder of the brilliant, resilient mathematician he has become."
~ Pooja Gupta, Cuemath Coach
Pooja's answer was to make the class a place where asking cost nothing. Her sessions are built around activities and plain explanations rather than demonstrations to be copied, which gives a half-formed thought somewhere to go. Oscar started asking. Then he started looking forward to the topics he had not met yet, which is the point at which a student stops being carried by the lesson and starts pulling on it.
"Learning Maths with Cuemath and Ms. Pooja is fun, engaging, and easy to understand! With interesting activities, simple explanations, and regular practice, oscar builds confidence and enjoy learning Maths every day."
~ Oscar's Parent
An Exceeding rating on every criterion is a broader statement than a single mark. Criteria are assessed separately precisely so that a strong result in one area cannot cover a weak one in another, so clearing them all means the understanding is even rather than patchy. For a student whose questions used to stay in his head, the interesting part is not the grade. It is that every corner of the subject is now one he will take on.
The questions are the whole story. Oscar now says out loud what he does not yet follow, goes at a hard problem instead of around it, and looks forward to the topics he has not met. A student who does all three is MathFit. Eighteen months was enough because nobody waited for him to speak up on his own. Wait longer and the silence itself becomes the first thing to fix.
