# Study the layout given below in Fig. 9.58 and answer the question: Write an expression to calculate the perimeter of the living room.

**Solution:**

Given, the layout represents two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room.

We have to write an expression to calculate the perimeter of the living room.

__Perimeter__ is the total length of the boundary of any closed shape.

So, perimeter = sum of all sides

Perimeter of living room = 15 + 2 + x + 5 + (15 - x) + 2 + 5

= 15 + 2 + x + 5 + 15 - x + 2 + 5

= 15 + 15 + 2 + 2 + 5 + 5

= 30 + 4 + 10

= 40 + 4

= 44 m

Therefore, the perimeter of the living room is 44 m.
