The sum of some terms of G.P is 315 whose first term and common ratio are 5 and 2 respectively. Find the last term and the number of terms
Solution:
Let the sum of n terms of the G.P be 315.
It is known that Sn = a (1 - rn)/(1 - r)
It is given that a = 5 and common ratio r = 2
Hence,
315 = 5(2n - 1)/(2 - 1)
⇒ 2n - 1 = 63
⇒ 2n = 64 = (2)6
⇒ n = 6
Therefore, the last term of the G.P. is 6th term
a6 = ar6 - 1
= ar5
= 5 x (2)5
= 5 x 32
= 160
Thus, the last term of the G.P is 160
