1y3y6 is divisible by 11. Find the value of y.
Solution:
If 1y3y6 is divisible by 6 then,
1 + 3 + 6 - (y + y) = 0 --- (1)
Or
(y + y ) - (1 + 3 + 6) = 11 or multiple of 11 --- (2)
From (1) we get,
10 - 2y = 0
2y = 10
y = 5
From (2) we get
2y - 10 = 11
y = 21/2 = 10.5 which is not valid
Therefore the value of y which makes the number divisible by 11 is 5
✦ Try This: 2x4x8 is divisible by 11. Find the value of x.
If 2x4x8 is divisible by 6 then,
2 + 4 + 8 - (x + x) = 0 --- (1)
Or
(x + x) - (2 + 4 + 8) = 11 --- (2)
From (1) we get,
14 - 2x = 0
2x = 14
x = 7
From (2) we get
2x - 14 = 11
y = 25/2 = 12.5 which is not valid
Therefore the value of x which makes the number divisible by 11 is 7.
