If an object moves 40 m north, 40 m west, 40 m south, and 40 m east, what's the total displacement?
40 m, 0 m, 80 m, 160 m
Solution:
Let the object start to move from point X in the north direction
The path is shown in the image below:
We have to find the displacement of the total path
Displacement is defined as the difference of the final destination and the initial destination
Here the initial destination is point X and the final destination after completing the path is also point X.
∴ the displacement of the object will be the distance of point x to the point x which is 0
∴ the displacement will also be equal to 0 m .
If an object moves 40 m north, 40 m west, 40 m south, and 40 m east, what's the total displacement?
40 m, 0 m, 80 m, 160 m
Summary:
When an object moves 40 m north, 40 m west, 40 m south, and 40 m east, the total displacement of the object is 0 meter.
