A shirt with marked price Rs 800 was sold at Rs 680. The rate of discount allowed on the shirt is
(a) 10%
(b) 15%
(c) 20%
(d) 25%
Solution:
Let the Marked Price (MP) = Rs.800
The price at which the shirt is finally sold is the selling price (SP) = Rs. 680
Discount = MP - SP = Rs. 800 - Rs. 680 = Rs. 120
The rate of discount (%) = [(MP - SP)/MP] × 100
= [120/800] × 100
= [12/80] × 100
= [3/20] × 100
= 3 × [100/20]
= 3 × 5
= 15%
✦ Try this: A shirt with marked price Rs 750 was sold at Rs 700. What is the rate of discount allowed on the shirt?
The discount = MP - SP = Rs. 750 - Rs. 700 = Rs. 50
The discount % = [(MP - SP)/MP] × 100
= [(750 - 700)/750] × 100
= [50/750] × 100
= 100/15
= 20/3
= 6 ⅔%
