Write four more rational numbers to complete the pattern:
-1/3, -2/6, -3/9, ______, ______, _______, _______.
Solution:
Given, the rational numbers are -1/3, -2/6, -3/9,....
We have to complete the pattern with four more rational numbers.
From the pattern we observe that the denominator is a multiple of 3.
-1/3 = (-1) × 1 / (3 × 1)
-2/6 = (-1) × 2 /(3 × 2)
If the numerator and denominator of a rational number are multiplied or divided by a non-zero integer, we get a rational number which is said to be equivalent to the given rational number.
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 4,
-1/3 × 4/4 = (-1) × 4 / 3 × 4 = -4/12
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 5,
-1/3 × 5/5 = (-1) × 5 / 3 × 5 = -5/15
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 6,
-1/3 × 6/6 = (-1) × 6 / 3 × 6 = -6/18
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 7,
-1/3 × 7/7 = (-1) × 7 / 3 × 7 = -7/21
Therefore, the four more rational numbers to complete the pattern are -4/12, -5/15, -6/18 and -7/21.
