Examine the following series of numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 10. What is the median value?
Solution:
Median is one of the three measures of central tendency. When describing a set of data, the central position of the data set is identified.
This is known as the measure of central tendency
The Median Value is a middle value by position.
Since the numbers are arranged in the ascending order, the middle value is 3 by virtue of its position.
There are two values below 3 and two values above 3.
1 2 3 4 10
Hence 3 is the median value.
Alternatively the median can also be determined by identifying the (n + 1) / 2 th term
Since n = 5
(n+1) / 2 th term = (5 + 1) / 2
= 3rd term of the given series.
The third term is the number 3 and hence the median is 3.
