About the game
Water the Equivalent Fraction is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to recognise equivalent fractions visually. An in-game tutorial introduces the mechanic, then players see two gardens — one already showing a fraction, the other divided into a different number of parts — and choose how many of the second garden’s plots to plant so both gardens describe the same shaded amount. When the watering can pours and both gardens bloom together, the equivalence shows up in the same instant. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that the same shaded whole can be written as more than one fraction, depending on how the parts are cut.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can write 1/2 = 2/4 on paper but can't yet picture why. Flower Power flips the work — instead of computing the equivalent numerator, the child has to construct the equivalent shaded amount on a garden cut into different pieces. Building the equivalence by hand makes the abstract rule concrete: equivalent fractions are different counts of different-sized plots that add up to the same patch.
Once a student has planted a few gardens, the question 'how many of these would equal that?' becomes intuitive. Tutors often pause before the student selects and ask 'how big is each plot on the right compared to the left?' so the spatial reasoning leads the count, not the other way around.

What is finding equivalent fractions?
Equivalent fractions are different ways of writing the same shaded amount. 1/2 and 2/4 look different on the page, but they describe the same patch of garden — just cut into a different number of equal parts. In Flower Power, this becomes physical: the left garden shows a fraction; the right garden, divided into a different number of plots, asks the student to plant the same shaded amount. When both gardens bloom together, the two fractions are equivalent — even though the numbers don't match.
Why can the same shaded amount have more than one fraction name?
Because a fraction depends on how the whole is divided. If you cut a garden into 2 parts and shade 1, that's 1/2. If you cut the same garden into 4 parts and shade 2, the shaded patch is identical — but the fraction is now 2/4. Same amount, different partition. Equivalent fractions are always the same amount described with different denominators. The reason this matters: most real fraction work — comparing, adding, subtracting — depends on rewriting a fraction with the partition you need. Flower Power is where that rewriting starts to feel natural, before any algebra is involved.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that introduces the two-garden layout and shows how planting the right number of plots on the second garden produces an equivalent fraction. From the second round onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 3 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. Kids can play a single round in under a minute once they're comfortable with the two-garden layout. There's no time pressure — the watering can waits, and a wrong selection can be changed before the round ends.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Plant the Equivalent Fraction is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can recognise equivalent fractions visually across different partitions, the natural next steps are comparing fractions (deciding which of two unlike fractions is larger — usually solved by finding a common denominator first, which is exactly what equivalence enables) and adding fractions with unlike denominators (rewriting both fractions to a shared partition before adding). Both are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
