Square Footage Formula
Square footage also known as square feet is a unit generally used to express the area of a surface. To find square feet, the length measurement in feet is multiplied by the width measurement in feet. This yields a product called the area, which is expressed in square feet or square footage. Let's look into the square footage formula in detail.
Formula to Calculate Square Footage
For common geometric shapes like squares, circles, rectangles, and triangles, you can find the area or square footage with a few simple formulas as listed below.
Let's look into the below square footage formulas for different geometric figures.
1. Square Footage Formula for Rectangles and Squares
If the shape considered is a rectangle or a square then the square footage or the area is calculated by finding the product of the length and the width expressed in terms of feet.
Area of a Rectangle = Length × Width
In a square, the length is equal to its width or we can say every side of a square is equal in measure thus, the square footage where the side is in terms of feet will be calculated using the following formula,
Area of a Square = (Side)2
2. Square Footage Formula for Parallelogram
The area of a parallelogram can be calculated by multiplying its base times height both expressed in terms of the feet.
Area of a Parallelogram = Base × Height
3. Finding the Square Footage of a Triangle
There's a square feet formula for triangles that is just one step more than finding the area of a parallelogram.
Area of a Triangle = (1/2) × Base × Height
4. Square Footage Formula of a Circle
All you need to calculate the area or square footage of a circle is its radius in terms of feet. The area is expressed using the following formula,
Area of a Circle = πr2
Let's work out on some practical examples using Square Footage Formuls.
Solved Examples Using Square Footage Formula
-
Example 1:A rectangular room has dimensions of 10 feet by 11 feet. Calculate the square footage of the room.
Solution:
Given: Length = 10 feet, Breadth = 11 feet
According to the Square Footage formula of a rectangle,
Area = Length × Breadth
By substituting the values we get,
Area = 10 × 11 = 110 square feet
Answer: Thus, the square footage of the room is 110.

Example 2:There are 16 boxes of tile with 8 tiles in each box. Each tile is 8 inches wide by 36 inches long. Calculate the square footage of tile I have using square footage formula.
Solution:
Given: Dimensions of the tile = 8 inches × 36 inches
Using square footage formula, Area of a rectangle = Length × Breadth
Thus, are of each tile = 8 × 36 = 288 square inches
But,
1 square foot = 12 in × 12 in = 144 square inches
Thus, 288 square inches = 2 square feet
Hence, the area of each tile is 2 square feet.
Since, there are 16 boxes of tiles with 8 tiles in each box where each tile measures 2 square feet,
Total square footage of tile = Number of boxes × Number of tiles in each box × Area of each tile
= 16 × 8 × 2
= 256 square feet
Answer: Thus, the total square footage of the tile is 256 square feet.
