Add Fractions to Light Up the House Game
Kids see two fractions whose denominators don’t match and pick the switch holding their sum. Each right pick lights up a room — until the whole house glows. It's the same way Cuemath tutors introduce common denominators in live 1:1 classes.

About the game
Add Fractions to Light Up the House is a free online math game for Grade 4 students learning to add fractions with unlike denominators. An in-game tutorial walks players through the mechanic, then each room of the house presents two fractions whose denominators don’t match, alongside a panel of switches with possible sums to pick from. The right switch lights up the room. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that fractions with different-sized pieces can’t be added directly until they’ve been rewritten with the same-sized pieces — which is exactly why common denominators exist.
From the classroom
How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can confidently add fractions with the same denominator but freezes when the denominators differ. Lightscapes makes the obstacle physical: you can't combine 1/3 and 1/6 the way you combined 1/5 and 2/5, because the pieces aren't the same size to begin with. The student has to find a denominator both fractions can be rewritten with — usually the LCM — before any addition is possible.
Once a student has lit a few rooms, the question 'can these be added straight away?' replaces 'what's the answer?'. Tutors often pause before the switch is picked and ask 'what size pieces would let you add these?' — so the equivalent-fraction step gets named, not skipped.
Often paired with
Adding fractions with like denominators and equivalent fractions before, subtracting fractions with unlike denominators after.
What students said
Students paused at the switch panel — working out a common denominator under their breath before clicking, then watching the room light up once the sum was right.

What Your Child Practices
Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.
Fluency
Fluency in finding a common denominator for two fractions and rewriting them in equivalent form.
Understanding
Understanding that fractions with different-sized pieces can’t be added directly — they have to be rewritten as the same-sized pieces first.
Application
Application of common-denominator reasoning to whatever pair of unlike fractions the next room presents, across 6 rounds.
Reasoning
Reasoning about why the LCM of two denominators is usually the cleanest common denominator — and why the parts must match before counts can be combined.

We love solving doubts
What is adding fractions with unlike denominators?
Adding fractions with unlike denominators means combining fractions whose bottom numbers don't match — like 1/3 + 1/6. You can't just add the numerators directly the way you would with same-sized pieces, because the pieces are different sizes to begin with. The standard approach is to rewrite both fractions with the same denominator first (a common denominator, usually the lowest common multiple of the two denominators) and then add the new numerators. So 1/3 + 1/6 becomes 2/6 + 1/6, which equals 3/6, or 1/2.
Why do we need a common denominator before adding?
Because addition combines counts of equal-sized pieces — and when the denominators differ, the pieces aren't equal-sized to begin with. Adding 1/3 and 1/6 directly would be like adding two big slices and one small slice and calling it three: the count is right, but the slice sizes aren't the same, so the total is meaningless. Rewriting both fractions with the same denominator is really re-cutting them into pieces of identical size. Now the numerators count comparable things, and addition works the way it does for whole numbers.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial — a guide character introduces the house and the switch mechanic before the first scored round. From the second round onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 4 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. Each round is one room and one fraction sum, so the pace is set by how long the student wants to spend finding a common denominator. There's no time pressure — the switches wait, and a wrong pick simply leaves the room dark until the right one is selected.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Add Fractions to Light Up the House is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can confidently add fractions with unlike denominators, the natural next steps are subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (which uses the same common-denominator move in reverse) and adding or subtracting mixed numbers (which combines whole-number arithmetic with the fraction work). Both are Grade 4–5 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 4 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 4 fraction operations). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
