Add to Cross the Pond is a free online math game for Grade 4 students learning to add fractions with the same denominator. An in-game tutorial introduces the mechanic, then players see two fractions and pick the lily pad whose value equals their sum — each correct click hops Froggie one lily pad closer to the other side. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that when the parts are already the same size, you only add how many of them there are; the size of each part — the denominator — doesn’t change.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student has just learned that fractions are parts of a whole, but is still tempted to add the denominators along with the numerators. Froggie's pond makes the size question physical: every fraction in the round is already cut into the same number of equal parts, so the parts already match. The student isn't combining two new wholes — they're counting up two groups of the same-sized pieces.
Once a student has hopped Froggie across a few times, the question 'how many fifths in total?' starts replacing 'what's 1/5 + 2/5?' Tutors often ask 'are the pieces the same size?' before the student picks a lily pad — so the size check becomes automatic, well before unlike-denominator addition shows up.

What is adding fractions with like denominators?
Adding fractions with like denominators means combining fractions whose bottom number — the denominator — is the same. Because each fraction is already cut into the same-sized pieces, you only need to count how many pieces you have in total. So 1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5: one piece plus two pieces equals three pieces, and each piece is still a fifth. The denominator doesn't change; only the numerator does.
Why doesn’t the denominator change when we add fractions with the same denominator?
Because the denominator describes the size of each piece, not how many pieces you have. Cutting a pizza into 5 equal slices doesn't change the size of a slice when you take more — each slice is still a fifth, whether you've taken one or four. Adding 1/5 + 2/5 means combining one fifth-sized slice with two fifth-sized slices: you now have three slices, but each slice is still a fifth. The numerator (the count) goes up; the denominator (the size) doesn't. Adding the denominators would mean re-cutting the pizza into thinner slices — which isn't what addition does.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that introduces the lily-pad mechanic and shows how Froggie hops to whichever pad holds the correct fraction sum. From the second round onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 4 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 4 minutes. Each round is a single sum, and Froggie hops across in seconds once the right lily pad is clicked. There's no time pressure — kids can take as long as they need to add the numerators in their head before picking a pad.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Add to Cross the Pond is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can confidently add fractions with the same denominator, the natural next steps are subtracting fractions with the same denominator (which uses the same logic — only the numerator changes) and adding fractions with unlike denominators (which requires finding a common denominator first, building directly on the equivalent-fraction skills from earlier games). Both are Grade 4–5 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 4 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 4 fraction operations). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
