About the game
Compare the Fractions is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to compare two fractions. An in-game tutorial introduces the racing mechanic, then each round shows two fractions and three lanes ahead — one for less than, one for greater than, one for equal. The student steers the car into the right lane before the timer runs out. The right lane keeps the car racing forward and showers it with confetti; the wrong lane shakes the car and sends smoke pluming. Across 6 rounds, students build the kind of speed-of-recognition that comes from real understanding — not from a guessing strategy.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student understands fraction comparison in principle but still pauses to work each one out. Race for Equality applies a gentle timer pressure — not as a stress test, but as a recognition challenge. Comparing 3/8 and 5/8 should feel like seeing a number, not solving a problem; comparing 2/3 and 1/2 should feel like recalling a relationship, not deriving one. The car steering forces the student to commit before the doubt loop kicks in.
Once a student has raced through a few rounds, the question 'which is bigger?' starts to be answered by sight, not by arithmetic. Tutors often ask 'before the timer ticks, what does your gut say?' so the student catches their own developing intuition instead of dismissing it.

What is comparing fractions?
Comparing fractions means deciding whether one fraction is less than, greater than, or equal to another. The standard symbols are < (less than), > (greater than), and = (equal). Some comparisons are quick: 3/8 and 5/8 share a denominator, so the one with the bigger numerator wins. Others need a step in between: 2/3 and 1/2 don't share a denominator, so you either find a common denominator (4/6 vs 3/6 — 2/3 is bigger) or picture the shaded amount (two thirds is more than half). Race for Equality runs students through both kinds.
Why does fraction comparison sometimes feel quick and sometimes feel slow?
Because the cognitive step is different in different cases. With matching denominators (3/8 vs 5/8), the comparison is a single move — bigger numerator wins. With matching numerators (2/5 vs 2/7), the comparison flips — a bigger denominator means smaller pieces, so 2/5 is actually bigger than 2/7. With nothing matching (2/3 vs 5/8), you have to either rewrite both with a common denominator or picture the shaded amount. The timer pressure in this game isn't there to rush the student — it's there to surface which cases have become recognition and which still need work.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that explains the racing mechanic, the three lanes (less than, greater than, equal), and the timer. From the second round onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 3 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 4 minutes. Each round is one fraction comparison with a short timer, so the pace is quicker than most games in Cuemath Playground. The timer is meant to encourage recognition, not to penalise: a wrong steer just shakes the car briefly and the next round begins.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Compare the Fractions is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can confidently compare two fractions on sight, the natural next steps are ordering three or more fractions (sequencing them from least to greatest), comparing fractions with unlike denominators using common-denominator reasoning, and the operations that build on top of comparison — adding and subtracting fractions, where comparing denominators is the first step. All are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
