Compare the Integers Game
Students see two integers — positive, negative, or zero — and steer the car toward the right comparison symbol before the timer runs out. The right turn keeps the car moving; the wrong one sends smoke pluming. It's the same way Cuemath tutors lock in integer comparison in live 1:1 classes.

About the game
Compare the Integers is a free online math game for Grade 6 students learning to compare integers. An in-game tutorial introduces the racing mechanic, then each round shows two integers — positive or negative — and three lanes ahead, one for less than, one for greater than, one for equal. The student steers the car into the right lane before the timer runs out. The right lane keeps the car racing forward; the wrong lane shakes the car and sends smoke pluming. Across 6 rounds, students confront the move that defines integer reasoning: with negative numbers the comparison flips — -7 is less than -3, not greater, because position on the number line decides the order, not the size of the digits.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student understands integer comparison in principle but still freezes for a beat on negative pairs. Race for Equality applies a gentle timer pressure — not as a stress test, but as a fluency challenge. Comparing 5 and 8 should feel automatic; comparing -5 and -8 should feel just as automatic, but it usually doesn't, because the digit size says one thing and the number line says another. The car steering forces the student to commit before the doubt loop kicks in.
Once a student has raced through a few rounds, the question 'which is bigger?' starts to be answered by sight, not by hesitation. Tutors often ask 'where does each number sit on the number line?' before the student commits — so the spatial check leads the comparison, not the absolute value of the digits.
Often paired with
Plotting and ordering integers before, integer arithmetic after.
What students said
Students learned to spot the answer before steering — calling out 'less than!' on a tricky negative pair, then watching the car sail through the right lane and pick up confetti.

What Your Child Practices
Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.
Fluency
Fluency in comparing two integers on sight — picking the correct relationship (<, >, =) before the timer runs out, even when negatives are in play.
Understanding
Understanding that integer comparison rests on position on the number line, not on the digit size: -7 is less than -3 because it sits further to the left.
Application
Application of comparison reasoning to whatever pair the next stretch of road throws up — positives, negatives, and mixed — across 6 rounds.
Reasoning
Reasoning about why the comparison flips for negatives — and why this single insight unlocks every later operation on integers, from addition through to inequalities.

We love solving doubts
What is comparing integers?
Comparing integers means deciding whether one integer is less than, greater than, or equal to another. The standard symbols are < (less than), > (greater than), and = (equal). With positive integers, comparison feels natural: 5 < 8 because 8 sits further right on the number line, and the digits agree. With negatives, the rule still works — but the digits seem to disagree. -8 is less than -5 because -8 sits further to the left of zero, even though 8 is greater than 5 in the positive world. The rule is the number line, not the digits.
Why does the comparison flip for negative numbers?
Because the digits and the number line tell different stories once negatives are involved. With positives, more digits means more value — 8 is greater than 5 because it sits three units further to the right. With negatives, more digits means more distance from zero, but in the wrong direction: -8 sits eight units to the left of zero, while -5 sits only five units left. So -5 is greater than -8, even though 5 is less than 8 in the positive world. This single move — letting the number line decide instead of the digits — is what unlocks every later integer operation.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that explains the racing mechanic, the three lanes (less than, greater than, equal), and the timer. From the second round onwards, students play independently. The tutorial assumes nothing — even students new to negative numbers can pick up the rule before the first scored round begins.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 4 minutes. Each round is one integer comparison with a short timer, so the pace is quicker than most games in Cuemath Playground. The timer is meant to encourage recognition, not to penalise: a wrong steer just shakes the car briefly and the next round begins.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Compare the Integers is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A student can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a student can confidently compare integers on sight, the natural next steps are integer arithmetic — adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing across the negative-positive line. Each of these operations builds on comparison: addition needs the student to know which way the result will move on the number line; subtraction is really addition of the opposite sign. All are Grade 6–7 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 6 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 6 integers). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
