About the game
Match the Fractions is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to identify fractions from visual models. The game shows a fraction like 3/4, and the player picks the shaded shape that matches it from a set of carnival-style targets. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that a fraction is a specific picture: the denominator tells you how the whole is cut, and the numerator tells you how much of it is shaded.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can read a fraction like 2/4 but doesn't yet have a picture in their head — they say 'two-fourths' but aren't sure what two-fourths actually looks like. Before the student clicks anything, the tutor asks: 'What should the picture look like? How many equal parts? How many shaded?' The naming has to land before the matching can.
When a student picks the wrong target, that's the moment. Tutors point at the unmatched picture and ask 'count the parts in the one you picked — what fraction does that picture actually show?' The mismatch makes the symbol-to-picture link visible, and a child who gets to that question has already done the real work of fraction sense.

What is matching fractions to visual models?
Matching fractions means looking at a fraction like 3/4 and recognizing the picture that shows it — a shape divided into 4 equal parts with 3 of them shaded. The fraction names the picture, and the picture names the fraction. They have to line up exactly. To match correctly, you check two things: how many equal parts is the whole cut into (the denominator), and how many of those parts are shaded (the numerator).
Why does the picture have to match the fraction exactly?
Because the fraction is the picture, written in numbers. 2/4 doesn't mean 'roughly half-shaded' — it means 'a whole cut into 4 equal parts, with 2 of them shaded'. A picture cut into 3 parts with 1 shaded looks similar to a picture cut into 4 parts with 1 shaded, but they're 1/3 and 1/4 — different fractions. Spotting the difference is the work of fraction sense, and it's what this game trains.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The first round acts as a built-in tutorial — kids see a fraction, the targets light up, and the game shows them what a correct match looks like. From round 2 onwards, students play independently. No adult walkthrough needed.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. A single round usually takes under a minute, so kids can dip in and out — practice three rounds, come back later, finish the rest. Progress saves in-session, and the game can be restarted anytime.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Match the Fractions is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can match fractions to their visual models confidently, the natural next steps are comparing fractions (which of two fractions is larger), finding equivalent fractions (recognizing that 1/2 and 2/4 show the same shaded amount), and plotting fractions on a number line. All three are Grade 3 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
