Ordering of Integers

Ordering of Integers Game

Students sort a set of integers from least to greatest, threading negative and positive values together on a single rail. Each correctly ordered set sends the ship one galaxy further. It's the same way Cuemath tutors untangle the negative-number trap in live 1:1 classes.

Galactic Mavericks — Ordering of Integers
About the game

Ordering of Integers is a free online math game for Grade 6 students learning to order positive and negative numbers. An in-game tutorial sets up the mechanic, then players are handed a set of integers — positive and negative — to drag into order between two fixed bookend numbers on the rail. Each correctly ordered run sends the ship to the next galaxy. Across 6 rounds, students confront the move that defines integer reasoning: negative numbers don’t follow the same “bigger means more” rule as positive ones — -7 is less than -3, not greater.

From the classroom

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game

Tutors use this when a student can read negative numbers but hasn't yet built a number-line picture for them. The galactic rail makes the direction physical: one negative bookend sits at one end, a positive bookend at the other, and every card has to find its place between them. The student isn't memorising a rule about minus signs — they're placing each number where it actually belongs.

Once a student has dragged a few sets, the negative-number question stops being abstract. Tutors often pause the round and ask 'is -7 to the left or right of -3?' before the student commits — so the spatial check leads the comparison, not the absolute value of the digits.

Often paired with
Plotting integers on a number line before, comparing and adding integers after.
What students said
Students kept tracing the rail with a finger before dragging — saying numbers in order out loud, then catching themselves on the negatives ('wait, -7 first, not -3') before the ship took off.

A Cuemath tutor can do what a game can’t — diagnose exactly where your child gets stuck on integers, and sequence what comes next.

What Your Child Practices

Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.

Fluency
Fluency in placing integers — positive, negative, and zero — at their correct positions on a single number line.
Understanding
Understanding that negative numbers grow in value as their absolute size shrinks: -7 is less than -3, not the other way around.
Application
Application of integer ordering to whatever set the next galaxy throws at them, across 6 rounds.
Reasoning
Reasoning about why the number line — not the digits’ size — settles every comparison between two integers.

We love solving doubts

What is ordering integers?

Ordering integers means arranging a set of whole numbers — positive, negative, and zero — from least to greatest (or the other direction). The rule is the number line: a number that sits further to the left is always less than one further to the right. So -7 is less than -3 (it sits further left), and -3 is less than 0 (also further left). The size of the digits alone doesn't decide the order — the position on the number line does.

Why is -7 less than -3?

Because -7 sits further to the left of zero on the number line. With positive numbers, 7 is greater than 3 because it's three units further to the right. With negatives, the same rule still applies — but the direction flips. The further left a number is, the smaller its value. -7 is seven units to the left of zero; -3 is only three units left. So -3 is greater than -7, even though 7 is greater than 3 in the positive world. This is the move that defines integer reasoning, and it's the gap most Grade 6 students cross during this topic.

Does the game explain how to play?

Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that explains the bookend setup and shows how to drag cards into the correct positions. From the second round onwards, students play independently — no walkthrough needed, even for students new to negative numbers.

How long does it take to play?

A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. Each round is one set of integers to sort, so a student can pause between galaxies if they want to think. There's no time pressure — the ship waits, and a card placed wrong can be moved before confirming.

Is the game free? Will it stay free?

Yes. Galactic Mavericks is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.

Are there ads or distractions in the game?

No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A student can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.

What should my child learn after this?

Once a student can confidently order a mixed set of integers, the natural next steps are comparing pairs of integers (the foundation for inequalities) and integer arithmetic — adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing across the negative-positive line. Both are Grade 6–7 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 6 math curriculum.

How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?

This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 6 integers). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
