About the game
Plotting Fractions on a Number Line is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to place fractions on a number line. An in-game tutorial introduces the mechanic, then players divide the number line into equal parts based on the fraction’s denominator and move a helicopter to place Mr. Panda at the correct point. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that the denominator tells you how to partition the whole, and the numerator tells you where to stop.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can read a fraction like 3/4 but doesn’t yet feel what the denominator is telling them to do. The partitioning step makes it physical — the 4 in 3/4 isn’t just a number under a line, it’s instructions: cut the whole into 4 equal parts.
Once students have done this themselves a few times, the abstract denominator becomes something they can see. Tutors often ask "what does this 4 tell you?" before the student touches the slider, so the reasoning comes before the action.

What is plotting fractions on a number line?
Plotting a fraction on a number line means marking the exact point where the fraction sits between 0 and 1 (or between any two whole numbers). To plot a fraction like 3/4, you first divide the interval into 4 equal parts — that’s what the denominator tells you to do — and then count 3 of those parts from 0. The point where you land is the location of 3/4.
Why is the denominator important for plotting fractions?
The denominator tells you how many equal parts to divide the whole into. For 3/8, you divide the number line between 0 and 1 into 8 equal parts. For 3/4, you divide it into 4. This is why a number line partitioned into eighths looks different from one partitioned into fourths — and why 1/4 and 2/8 end up at the same point. The denominator is essentially an instruction for how to cut the whole.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game includes a built-in tutorial that introduces the mechanic before the first round — how to use the slider to divide the number line and how to move the helicopter to the right spot. This means Grade 3 students can play independently, without needing an adult to explain the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 6 minutes. Kids can play a single round in about a minute if they’re just practicing a specific fraction type. There’s no pressure to finish — the game saves progress in-session and can be restarted anytime.

Yes. Plotting Fractions on a Number Line is free to play now and will remain free. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child is comfortable plotting fractions on a number line, the natural next steps are comparing fractions (which of two fractions is larger) and finding equivalent fractions (noticing that 1/4 and 2/8 land at the same point). Both are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
