About the game
Select the Addition Facts is a free online math game for Grade 1 students learning the addition facts that make sums up to 10. Each round shows a target number — say, 7 — and a spread of cards with addition facts on them. The student clicks every card whose sum equals the target. The cards’ backs flip to reveal a picture of the same total, so the addition fact and the quantity it stands for line up directly. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that the same number can be broken into many different pairs — and that an addition fact isn’t a memorised string of symbols, it’s a count of things.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student knows their facts but doesn't yet feel them as quantities — when 4+3 and 5+2 both equal 7 because they're the same picnic spread, just split differently. Picnic Duel makes this visible: every card flips to show the picture, so picking the right ones isn't a memory test, it's a moment of recognising the same total in a new shape.
Once a student has played a few rounds, the question 'what other ways can we make this number?' starts coming naturally. Tutors often pause before the student picks and ask 'how many more cards do you think will work?' — so the student starts looking for patterns instead of fishing for the right answer.

What are addition facts?
Addition facts are the basic combinations of numbers that add together to make a given total. For sums up to 10, the facts include 0+1=1, 0+2=2, all the way up to 5+5=10 and 0+10=10. The same target number can be made of more than one fact: 7 = 4+3 = 5+2 = 6+1 = 0+7 = 7+0. Recognising these on sight is the foundation of arithmetic — once a child knows the small facts well, addition with regrouping, subtraction, and multiplication all build on top of them.
Why does the same number have so many addition facts?
Because addition is about combining quantities, not about reaching a specific symbol. The number 7 can be split into many different pairs because seven things can be grouped many different ways — 4 here and 3 there, 5 here and 2 there, all 7 in one place. Each pair is an addition fact for 7. Seeing this gives the child something deeper than memorisation: it's the start of number sense — the feeling that numbers are made of other numbers, and that the same number can show up in many disguises. Picnic Duel makes this concrete by flipping each card to reveal a picture of the same total — so the symbols on the front and the quantity on the back are clearly the same thing.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that introduces the target number, the cards on the picnic blanket, and how clicking the right cards wins the round. From the second round onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 1 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first — though many parents enjoy sitting with their child and asking 'what number is this card?' along the way.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 4 minutes. Each round is one target number and a spread of cards, so the pace is set by how many cards the student wants to flip and check before moving on. There's no time pressure — the picnic waits.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Select the Addition Facts is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can confidently recognise the addition facts that make sums up to 10, the natural next steps are missing-addend problems (where one number in the fact is hidden), addition with sums beyond 10 (which leads into regrouping in Grade 2), and the subtraction facts that mirror these addition facts (3 + 4 = 7 means 7 - 3 = 4). All are Grade 1–2 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 1 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 1 arithmetic operations). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
