About the game
Balance the Scale is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning measurement through weight. Players see a target weight on the left pan and drag packets, boxes, and jars from a shelf onto the right pan — combining items until the two sides match. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that a single target weight can be made up of several smaller weights added together, and that combining quantities to a target is just addition with units.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can read a weight like 700 g but doesn’t yet think about how that weight can be made up of smaller pieces. Dragging two or three items onto the pan turns the answer into a combination — and the combination is what addition actually is.
Once students have done this a few rounds, tutors often ask "what’s already on the pan?" before the student picks up another item. That single pause turns guessing into reasoning — the child starts thinking about what’s needed next, not just what’s available on the shelf.

What is balancing weights on a scale?
Balancing weights on a scale means making both sides of the scale weigh the same. If one side has a 500-gram block, the other side has to total 500 grams too — which you can do with one 500-gram item, or two 250-gram items, or any other combination that adds to 500. The whole point is that a single target weight can be made up of many smaller weights added together.
Why is combining weights important for measurement?
Most real measurement problems aren't about a single tidy number — they're about combinations. A bag at the grocery store, a load on a truck, ingredients in a recipe: each one is a total made from smaller parts. When a child can combine weights to hit a target, they're practicing the same kind of additive thinking they'll use later in unit conversion, multi-step word problems, and any situation where the answer is built from several pieces.
Does the game explain how to play?
No — the game doesn't need one. The drag-and-drop mechanic with clearly labelled weights on the shelf makes the goal obvious from the first pan: see the target on the left, build the same total on the right. Kids can start playing the moment the page loads.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. Kids can play a single round in under a minute if they're just practicing a specific weight target. There's no pressure to finish — the game saves progress in-session and can be restarted anytime.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Balance the Scale is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child is comfortable combining weights to balance a scale, the natural next steps are reading weights in mixed units (kilograms and grams), solving word problems that involve weight, and extending the same additive thinking to other measurement domains like length and capacity. All are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 measurement). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
