About the game
Collect All the Like Fractions is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to spot fractions that share a denominator. A short tutorial introduces the master card and how to match against it, then each round presents a new master fraction surrounded by cards on the table. Across 6 rounds, students learn to recognise that fractions sharing a denominator — like 2/7, 4/7, and 6/7 — name pieces of the same whole, the foundation for adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions later.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can read a fraction like 3/7 but doesn’t yet see why grouping it with 1/7, 5/7, and 6/7 is natural. The card-table view makes the shared unit visible: the master is 3/7, and the matching cards on the table all measure in sevenths. Spotting the matches is the same act as understanding that the denominator names the unit.
Once students do this themselves a few times, the role of the denominator clicks — they notice that the number on the bottom names the kind of piece, and that two fractions can only be combined directly when they share that piece. Tutors often ask "what is the same about every card you picked?" after a round, so the rule names itself instead of being told.

What are like fractions?
Like fractions are fractions that share the same denominator. 1/5, 2/5, and 4/5 are all like fractions — each card measures the whole in fifths. The numerator can be anything, but the denominator stays the same. Because they share a unit, like fractions can be added, subtracted, and compared directly without any conversion: 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5, and 4/5 is clearly bigger than 3/5 because both count fifths.
Why is identifying like fractions important?
Like fractions are the foundation for almost everything that follows in fraction work — adding and subtracting fractions, comparing fractions by numerator, and later finding common denominators so unlike fractions can be combined. A child who fluently spots that 1/8, 3/8, and 7/8 share a unit doesn’t have to think about it again — they treat them like counts of eighths. Without that, the rules for fraction arithmetic feel arbitrary.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that shows the master card, the cards on the table, and how to pick the ones that match. From round 2 onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 3 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 4 minutes. Kids can play a single round in about a minute if they’re practising one specific master fraction. There’s no timer pressure — students can take as long as they need to study each card before tapping.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Cardistry is free to play now and will remain free. It’s part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath’s mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can spot like fractions confidently, the natural next steps are adding and subtracting fractions that share a denominator, comparing like fractions by their numerator, and then equivalent fractions — fractions that represent the same value across different denominators. All three are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
