About the game
Find the Hidden Coordinates is a free online math game for Grade 8 students learning to rotate points on the coordinate plane. An in-game tutorial introduces the mechanic, then each round shows a starting point and a rotation instruction — like “90° clockwise about the origin” — and asks the student to click the grid cell where the rotated point lands. Each correct click extracts a piece of gold ore. Across 3 rounds, students confront the move that defines transformation geometry: a rotation isn’t a static rule to memorise, it’s a deliberate action — a direction, an angle, and a centre — that together determine exactly where the point ends up.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student has memorised the rotation rules — (x, y) → (y, -x) for 90° clockwise about the origin, and so on — but hasn't yet built a picture of why those rules produce the answer. The mining grid makes the rotation physical: the student can see the original point, the centre, and the destination, and trace the quarter-turn that connects them.
Once a student has extracted a few rounds of ore, the question 'which direction does this rotate?' replaces 'what's the rule for this case?'. Tutors often ask 'what would happen if the rotation went the other way?' before the student commits — so the direction-sensitivity of rotation gets felt, not just recalled.

What is rotating points on the coordinate plane?
A rotation on the coordinate plane is a turn around a fixed point — the centre of rotation. To rotate a point, you specify three things: the angle of the turn (90°, 180°, 270°…), the direction (clockwise or anticlockwise), and the centre the rotation pivots around (often the origin, but it can be any point). The rotated point ends up the same distance from the centre as the original, but turned through the specified angle in the specified direction. For a 90° clockwise rotation about the origin, the rule (x, y) → (y, -x) captures this — but the rule is the consequence of the geometry, not a substitute for it.
Why does the direction of rotation matter?
Because clockwise and anticlockwise rotations send the same point to completely different places. A 90° clockwise rotation of (3, 4) about the origin lands at (4, -3); a 90° anticlockwise rotation of the same point lands at (-4, 3). Same starting point, same angle, but opposite directions — and the destinations are mirror images across the line y = x. The centre of rotation matters for the same reason: rotating about the origin and rotating about a different point produce different destinations, even with the same angle and direction. A rotation is defined by all three pieces together. Remove any one and the answer becomes ambiguous.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that introduces the mining grid and walks through how a rotation instruction is read — the starting point, the angle, the direction, and the centre. From the second round onwards, students play independently. The tutorial covers everything needed to interpret each instruction without external help.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 3 rounds takes about 5 minutes. Each round is one rotation problem and one grid click, so the pace is set by how long the student spends working out the destination cell. There's no time pressure — the pickaxe waits, and a wrong cell can be reconsidered before extraction.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Find the Hidden Coordinates is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A student can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a student can confidently rotate points on the coordinate plane, the natural next steps are the other rigid transformations — reflections (flipping a point across a line) and translations (sliding a point in a direction) — and composing transformations (applying two or more in sequence). These are Grade 7–8 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 8 math curriculum, and they form the foundation for higher-level geometry work in Grades 9 and beyond.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 8 geometry). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
