About the game
Match the Fractions with the Shapes is a free online math game for Grade 5 students sharpening their fraction sense. A short tutorial introduces the carnival board and the matching mechanic, then each round shows a fraction alongside multiple shapes. Players tap the shapes that match the fraction; the darts fly to confirm. Across 6 rounds, students build the fluency to translate between numeric fractions and visual representations across multiple denominators.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student knows fractions on paper but stumbles to picture what 5/8 actually looks like — or to spot it among shapes that aren’t divided in the obvious way. The carnival’s mixed shapes force the translation: a fraction like 3/4 might be shaded as 3 of 4 wedges in one shape, but 6 of 8 wedges in another. Both are matches.
Once students do this themselves a few times, the rigid one-shape-per-fraction expectation falls away — they start treating fractions as values rather than pictures. Tutors often ask "how is the second shape also 3/4?" so the equivalence reasoning surfaces in the student’s own words.

What does it mean to match a fraction to its shape?
Matching a fraction to its shape means picking a visual representation — usually a partitioned shape like a circle, rectangle, or polygon — whose shaded portion equals the fraction. For 3/4, you’d look for shapes where exactly three out of four equal parts are shaded, but also for shapes where six out of eight equal parts are shaded — those are the same value, just partitioned differently. The shape isn’t fixed; the value is.
Why is matching fractions to shapes important?
This is where fraction notation stops being symbols and starts meaning something. A child who can’t picture 3/4 will struggle to estimate, compare, or operate with it; a child who can will do all three quickly. The skill is also the bridge to fraction equivalence — once you see that 3/4 and 6/8 produce the same shaded amount in different shapes, you’ve internalised equivalence without memorising the rule.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that shows the carnival board, the fraction prompt, and how the dart animation confirms each correct pick. From round 2 onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 5 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 4 minutes. Kids can play a single round in under a minute if they’re practising one specific fraction type. There’s no timer pressure — students can take as long as they need to study the shaded portions before tapping.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Match the Fractions with the Shapes is free to play now and will remain free. It’s part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath’s mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can match fractions to shape representations across multiple denominators, the natural next steps are comparing fractions with different denominators (which fraction is larger?), and adding or subtracting fractions where finding a common denominator matters. Both are Grade 5–6 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 5 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 5 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
