About the game
Select the Improper Fraction is a free online math game for Grade 4 students learning to identify improper fractions. A short tutorial introduces the format, then each round shows a shaded shape (or set of shapes) alongside four fraction options. Across 6 rounds, students learn to read shaded parts as a fraction whose numerator can be larger than the denominator — the defining feature of an improper fraction.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can name proper fractions like 3/4 but freezes the moment more than one whole is shaded. The shape forces the recognition: if two whole circles are filled and one half on top, with each piece being a half, the fraction isn’t 1/2 — it’s 5/2. Counting the shaded parts comes first, naming the fraction comes second.
Once students do this themselves a few times, the leap from "fraction less than one" to "fraction greater than one" stops being confusing. Tutors often ask "how many of the same-size parts are shaded in total?" before the student picks an option, so the counting comes before the choice.

What is an improper fraction?
An improper fraction is a fraction whose numerator is larger than (or equal to) its denominator. 5/2, 7/4, and 11/3 are all improper fractions — each represents more than one whole. The shaded-shape view makes this concrete: if you see two full circles plus a half-circle filled in, with each piece being a half, you’re looking at 5 halves — written 5/2. The "improper" name is misleading; there’s nothing wrong with these fractions. They just describe quantities greater than one whole.
Why is identifying improper fractions important?
Identifying improper fractions matters because it’s the bridge between proper-fraction work (fractions of one whole) and the larger fractional world — including mixed numbers, fraction division, and later, ratios. A child who sees 5/2 and recognises "that’s two and a half" doesn’t need to memorise a conversion rule — they’re reading the fraction the way it’s meant to be read. This recognition is what makes Grade 5 mixed-number work feel obvious instead of intimidating.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that walks through one example — showing how the shaded shape maps to a fraction, and how to pick the matching option from the four shown. From round 2 onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 4 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. Kids can play a single round in under a minute if they’re practising one specific fraction type. There’s no timer pressure — students can take as long as they need to count the shaded parts before selecting an option.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Buzzer Frizer is free to play now and will remain free. It’s part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath’s mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can identify an improper fraction from a shaded shape, the natural next steps are converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers (writing 5/2 as 2½ and back), and adding or subtracting fractions where the answer comes out as an improper fraction. Both are Grade 4–5 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 4 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 4 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
