How Our Math Tests Make Your Child MathFit™

This test measures the four skills that make a child MathFit™ — and the gaps it just uncovered are exactly what our expert tutors help your child master in live 1-on-1 sessions.
Fluency
Solving problems with accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility.
Example
Sorting shapes into triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles without counting sides each time.
Understanding
Moving beyond 'how' to 'why'.
Example
Knowing a square is a kind of rectangle — because the rules of one are built into the other.
Application
Using math across different problems and contexts.
Example
Using the same area logic for a rectangle, a triangle, and a parallelogram — same idea, different shape.
Reasoning
Training the brain to think logically and explain the choice.
Example
Explaining why two shapes with different sides can have the same area — and proving it works.

FAQs

What does the 3rd grade math test cover?

The 3rd grade math test covers Grade 3 topics across Numbers and Operations (expanded form of 4-digit numbers, addition and subtraction, number patterns, multiplication of single-digit numbers, division of 2-digit numbers), Geometry (properties of 2D shapes), Fractions (fraction of a whole), Measurement (application of time, comparison of length and mass), and Data Handling (scaled picture graphs).

How long does the 3rd grade math test take?

12 questions, typically 10–12 minutes. Grade 3 is when math becomes more abstract, so your child may take a little longer on reasoning questions — that is completely normal.

Is the 3rd grade math test based on the school curriculum?

Yes. Every question maps to a core Grade 3 topic taught in a typical third-grade classroom, so results directly reflect what your child’s school expects them to know.

Why does Grade 3 math matter so much?

Grade 3 is a critical transition year — when students move from learning to count to using math to reason and solve problems. Multiplication fluency and fraction foundations built now carry through to middle school.

What if my child struggles with fractions on the test?

Fractions are the most commonly flagged gap at Grade 3. The concept breakdown in the full report shows exactly which fraction topics need work, and our free worksheets give you targeted practice to address them.

What score is considered good for Grade 3?

The MathFit™ score is not a pass/fail grade. A score of 7–8 indicates solid grade-level mastery; 5–6 suggests some gaps to address; below 5 means foundational support is recommended before Grade 4 topics begin.

Can my 3rd grader take this on a tablet?

Yes. The test is fully optimized for touchscreen devices and most children navigate it independently without any help.

What is the MathFit™ score?

The MathFit™ score is a number out of 10 that reflects your child’s overall math readiness for Grade 3. It is calculated across four skill areas — Fluency, Understanding, Application, and Reasoning. A score of 8–10 means your child is thriving; 6–7 means developing with some gaps; below 6 means targeted support is recommended before Grade 4 topics build on these foundations.

What do Fluency, Understanding, Application, and Reasoning mean — and why do they matter?

Fluency measures how quickly and accurately your child handles Grade 3 operations — multiplication facts, division of 2-digit numbers, addition and subtraction. Understanding measures whether they grasp concepts like what a fraction actually represents or why expanded form works. Application measures whether they can solve real-world problems — like scaled picture graph questions or measurement comparisons. Reasoning measures logical thinking — identifying properties of 2D shapes or working through number patterns. A child can have high Fluency but low Reasoning, which means they can calculate but struggle when a question requires thinking beyond the formula.
