About the game
The Missing Number Locker is a free online math game for Grade 2 students learning missing-number addition. Each round shows a number sentence with one number missing — like 5 + ? = 8 — and the player types what they think the missing number is on the safe's keypad. Get it right, the safe opens, and gold coins spill out. Across 3 rounds, students start to feel that missing-number problems aren't a different kind of question — they're addition asked from a different angle.

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can compute 5 + 3 = 8 quickly but freezes the moment a question asks 5 + ? = 8. Those are the same number sentence — the question just asks a different piece of it. Before the student touches the keypad, the tutor often says: 'You already know what fits. What plus 5 makes 8?' That reframing is the lesson; the keypad just commits the answer.
When a student gets a missing-number question wrong, that's the moment. Tutors don't say 'wrong, try again.' They ask 'If 5 plus this number gives 8, how far does 5 still need to go?' The keypad makes the answer concrete — the child types a number, and the safe gives an honest yes-or-no. Working out 'how far' is what a Grade 2 child is actually learning, even though the worksheet just calls it 'addition'.

What is missing-number addition?
Missing-number addition is when a math problem has one piece left blank — like 5 + ___ = 8 — and the child has to figure out what number fits in the blank. It's still addition, but instead of asking 'what's 5 plus 3?', it asks 'what plus 5 makes 8?'. The same number bond, viewed from a different angle. For Grade 2, this is a first step toward thinking flexibly about number sentences — and the foundation for subtraction, even before subtraction is formally taught.
Why does finding the missing number matter?
A child who can find the missing number in 5 + ? = 8 already understands the relationship between addition and subtraction — they're using subtraction without calling it that. The missing number is the gap between 5 and 8, and feeling that gap is what makes subtraction make sense later. Children who only learn addition as 'add two numbers, get the answer' often struggle when subtraction shows up; children who do missing-number addition first usually don't, because they've been doing the thinking already.
Does the game explain how to play?
No — the game doesn't need one. The number sentence sits right on the safe with a blank where the answer goes, and the keypad is just below it. A Grade 2 child can see what's being asked the moment the page loads. Self-explanatory is the point: the time saved on a tutorial is time spent on the actual thinking the game is built for.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 3 rounds takes about 3 minutes. A single round usually runs under a minute — read the number sentence, work out what fits, type, watch the safe open. The format is short on purpose: focused practice on missing-number problems, not a long sitting. Kids can replay it as a brush-up; progress saves in-session and the game can be restarted anytime.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. The Missing Number Locker is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can find the missing number in addition problems confidently, the natural next steps are subtraction (which is the same idea named differently), fact families (recognising that 5 + 3 = 8 also means 8 − 5 = 3 and 8 − 3 = 5), and word problems where the missing piece is hidden in a sentence. All three are Grade 2 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 2 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 2 arithmetic operations). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
