Plant the Equivalent Fraction Game
Kids type the missing numerator, then watch the garden divide itself to show that two different fractions describe the very same shaded whole. It's the same way Cuemath tutors teach equivalence in live 1:1 classes.

About the game
Plant the Equivalent Fraction is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to find equivalent fractions. An in-game tutorial introduces the mechanic, then players type the missing numerator into a keypad to complete each pair of equivalent fractions. As soon as the answer is right, the garden divides itself into the new denominator’s parts and blooms the matching numerator’s plots — making it visible, in the same instant, that the two fractions describe the same shaded whole. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that equivalent fractions are the same amount written in different parts.
From the classroom
How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can repeat the rule “to make 1/2 = ?/4, multiply the numerator by 2” but doesn’t yet see why it works. The garden makes the why visible: the same shaded patch, just cut into more pieces. The numerator they type isn’t an algorithm output — it’s a count of how many of those new pieces it takes to keep the shaded amount the same.
Once students have watched the garden divide a few times, equivalence stops being a procedure and starts being something they can picture. Tutors often ask “how many of the new pieces would cover the same patch?” before the student touches the keypad — so the reasoning comes before the answer.
Often paired with
Identifying fractions from shaded shapes before, comparing fractions and adding unlike denominators after.
What students said
Students liked the sprinkler reveal, the flower colours, and the garden splitting into new sections — they started counting the new plots out loud and naming the equivalent fraction before the next round began.

What Your Child Practices
Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.
Fluency
Fluency in finding the missing numerator that makes two fractions equivalent.
Understanding
Understanding that equivalent fractions describe the same shaded whole — just cut into a different number of parts.
Application
Application of equivalence across whatever denominators the game throws at them, over 6 rounds.
Reasoning
Reasoning about why doubling the denominator means doubling the numerator — the proportional shift behind every equivalent fraction.

We love solving doubts
What is finding equivalent fractions?
Equivalent fractions are different ways of writing the same amount. 1/2 and 2/4 look different on the page, but they describe the same shaded whole — just cut into a different number of equal parts. To find an equivalent fraction, you multiply (or divide) both the numerator and the denominator by the same whole number. The proportion stays the same; only the number of pieces changes.
Why does the numerator change when the denominator changes?
Because both numbers describe the same shaded whole. The denominator tells you how many equal parts the whole is cut into; the numerator tells you how many of those parts are shaded. If you double the number of parts, each part is now half the size — so you need twice as many of them to cover the same amount. That's why 1/2 = 2/4: when the garden plot is cut into four pieces instead of two, you need two of the smaller pieces to match what one of the larger pieces covered before. The numerator changes precisely because the denominator did.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that introduces the keypad and shows how the garden divides itself once a correct numerator is entered. From the second round onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 3 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. Kids can play a single round in under a minute if they're focused on a specific equivalence pair. There's no time pressure — the keypad waits for them to think, and the sprinkler reveal gives them a moment to absorb why the answer works before the next round begins.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Plant the Equivalent Fraction is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can find equivalent fractions confidently, the natural next steps are comparing fractions (deciding which of two unlike fractions is larger — usually by finding a common denominator first) and adding fractions with unlike denominators (which is built directly on top of equivalence). Both are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
