Find the Right Floor

Find the Right Floor Game

Students see an integer — say, -4 — and pick the elevator floor it points to. Floors above ground are positive, basement levels are negative, and the ground floor is zero. It's the same way Cuemath tutors anchor integers on a number line in live 1:1 classes.

Up and Down — Find the Right Floor
About the game

Find the Right Floor is a free online math game for Grade 6 students learning to read integers as positions on a number line. Each round shows a question — like “Which floor does the integer -4 indicate?” — alongside an elevator panel where the floors run from positives at the top (Cafe, Food Court, GYM…) through ground floor (zero) down to negatives below (Market, Ghost House, Car Parking…). The student picks the floor that matches the integer. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that integers aren’t a separate kind of number — they’re positions on a vertical number line, with zero in the middle, the positives going up, and the negatives going down.

From the classroom

How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game

Tutors use this when a student can recite that 'negative numbers are less than zero' but hasn't yet built a number-line picture for what that means. Find the Right Floor turns the abstract sign into a position: -4 isn't a quantity less than zero, it's the parking level four flights below the lobby. Students who play a few rounds stop reading 'negative four' as a rule and start reading it as a place.

Once a student has matched a few integers to floors, the tutor's question shifts from 'what does this mean?' to 'where would this be?'. Tutors often pause before the student picks and ask 'is this above or below ground floor — and how far?' so the spatial check happens before the panel click.

Often paired with
Whole numbers and the positive number line before, ordering and comparing integers after.
What students said
Students traced down the elevator panel with a finger before clicking — counting 'minus one, minus two, minus three' past the ground floor and stopping at the right basement level.

A Cuemath tutor can do what a game can’t — diagnose exactly where your child gets stuck on integers, and sequence what comes next.

What Your Child Practices

Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.

Fluency
Fluency in matching an integer to its position on a vertical number line — positive numbers above zero, negative numbers below.
Understanding
Understanding that integers extend the number line in both directions: zero in the middle, positives going up, negatives going down — and the sign is just a direction tag.
Application
Application of integer-to-position mapping to whichever floor the next round names, across 6 rounds.
Reasoning
Reasoning about why -4 sits four units from zero (just like +4 does, only in the opposite direction) — and why the ground floor is the natural anchor for the whole system.

We love solving doubts

What is interpreting integers on a number line?

Interpreting integers on a number line means treating each integer as a position, not a calculation. The number line stretches in two directions from zero: positive integers go one way (usually right or up), negative integers go the other (left or down). The integer +4 is a position four units from zero in the positive direction; -4 is a position four units from zero in the negative direction. They aren't separate kinds of number — they're mirror points on the same line. Find the Right Floor uses an elevator as the model: ground floor is zero, upper floors are the positives (1, 2, 3…), basement levels are the negatives (-1, -2, -3…).

Why does treating integers as positions matter?

Because the rest of integer arithmetic falls out of it. Once a student knows -4 is a position four units below zero, -4 < 0 < +4 stops being a rule and starts being a visible fact about the line. Adding and subtracting integers becomes 'how far do I move, and in which direction?' rather than 'remember the sign rule.' Comparing integers becomes 'which one is further left?' rather than 'is the digit bigger or smaller?'. Every later move in integer reasoning leans on this picture; without it, students often end up memorising procedures they don't fully trust.

Does the game explain how to play?

No — the game doesn't need one. The elevator panel labels each floor by name, marks the ground floor as zero, and shows the question in plain language (“Which floor does the integer -4 indicate?”). A student who can read can play. The number line is built into the panel itself.

How long does it take to play?

A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 4 minutes. Each round is one integer to interpret and one floor to click, so the pace is set by how confidently the student can count up or down from the ground floor. There's no time pressure — the elevator waits.

Is the game free? Will it stay free?

Yes. Find the Right Floor is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.

Are there ads or distractions in the game?

No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A student can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.

What should my child learn after this?

Once a student can confidently match integers to positions on a number line, the natural next steps are ordering and comparing integers (which both depend on this positional reading) and then integer arithmetic — adding and subtracting integers (where the question becomes “how far, in which direction?”), and eventually multiplying and dividing across the negative-positive line. All are Grade 6–7 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 6 math curriculum.

How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?

This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 6 integers). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
