Plot and Build Your City Game
Players read a coordinate like (2, −3), find the point where the x- and y-values meet, and click to drop each building into place. It’s how Cuemath tutors teach the coordinate plane in live 1:1 classes.

About the game
Plot and Build Your City is a free online math game for Grade 6 students learning to plot points on the coordinate plane. A short tutorial places the first building for you, then each round names a coordinate, like a House at (2, −3), and asks you to click the matching spot on the grid. Because the coordinates run across all four quadrants, students have to track both the order of the pair and the sign of each number. Across 6 rounds, they build the habit of moving along the x-axis first, then the y-axis, every time.
From the classroom
How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can recite "x comes before y" but still plots (2, −3) as if it were (−3, 2). Clicking the wrong cell and watching the building land in the wrong part of the city makes the mistake concrete in a way a worksheet grid doesn’t.
A typical prompt in a session is "which way do you move first, and how far?" before the student clicks. Negative coordinates get the most attention — tutors often pause on a point like (−4, 2) to ask which quadrant it belongs in and why.
Often paired with
Reading a number line before, the distance between two points after.
What students said
Students said dropping a building in the wrong spot showed them instantly when they’d flipped x and y — and a few started reading the sign of each coordinate out loud before clicking, to keep the negatives straight.

What Your Child Practices
Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.
Fluency
Fluency with locating a point from its x- and y-coordinates on the grid.
Understanding
Understanding that an ordered pair is an instruction to move along x first, then y, and that the order can’t be swapped.
Application
Application of coordinate reading to place every building each round asks for, across 6 rounds.
Reasoning
Reasoning about how the sign of each coordinate decides which of the four quadrants a point lands in.

We love solving doubts
What does it mean to plot a point on the coordinate plane?
Plotting a point on the coordinate plane means finding the exact spot named by an ordered pair like (2, −3). The first number, the x-coordinate, tells you how far to move along the horizontal axis; the second number, the y-coordinate, tells you how far to move along the vertical axis. Where those two movements meet is the location of the point.
Why does the order of the coordinates matter?
The order of the coordinates is what fixes the point in one place. (2, −3) and (−3, 2) use the same two numbers but land in completely different parts of the grid, because x always comes before y. Reading the pair in order, x first then y, is the difference between placing a building where it belongs and placing it somewhere else entirely.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with a short tutorial that places the first building for you and shows how a coordinate maps to a spot on the grid. From the next round onwards, students place buildings on their own. This means Grade 6 students can play without an adult explaining the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 6 minutes. A single round takes about a minute once a student is comfortable reading coordinates. There’s no timer and no pressure to finish — the game holds progress in-session and can be restarted anytime.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Plot and Build Your City is free to play now and will remain free. It’s part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath’s mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can plot points across all four quadrants, the natural next steps are finding the distance between two points and reflecting or translating points on the grid. Both are Grade 6–8 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 6 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 6 coordinate plane). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
