Plot Equivalent Fractions on the Number Line Game
Kids move the helicopter along the number line, find the equivalent fraction Mr. Bear is asking for, and drop him at the right point. It’s how Cuemath tutors help students see that 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 all live at the same place on the line.

About the game
Plot Equivalent Fractions on the Number Line is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to place equivalent fractions on a number line. An animated first round introduces the helicopter, the arrow buttons, and the Drop button. Then each round, Mr. Bear asks for a fraction — sometimes 1/2, sometimes 2/4, sometimes 3/6 — and the player moves the helicopter to that point and drops the bear. Across 3 rounds, students discover that different-looking fractions can land at the same place on the line.
From the classroom
How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student can plot 1/2 confidently but doesn’t yet trust that 2/4 lands at the exact same spot. The bear-rescue framing makes the equivalence physical: if Mr. Bear was rescued at 1/2 in one round and at 2/4 in another, and the helicopter ended up over the same point both times, the equivalence has just shown itself — no rule needed.
Once students do this themselves a few times, the abstract equivalence rule starts to feel obvious instead of arbitrary. Tutors often ask "where did Mr. Bear land last time you saw 1/2?" before the student moves the helicopter, so the connection is made before the action is taken.
Often paired with
Plotting basic fractions before, comparing fractions and finding common denominators after.
What students said
Students noticed Mr. Bear, the helicopter, the arrow buttons, and the snowy landscape — and started predicting where the helicopter would land before pressing Drop.

What Your Child Practices
Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.
Fluency
Fluency with locating fractions on a number line and reading the line as a continuum of values.
Understanding
Understanding that 1/2 and 2/4 are the same point on the line — different writings of one value.
Application
Application of plotting to several equivalent fractions across 3 rounds with different denominators.
Reasoning
Reasoning about why two fractions can be written differently but live at the same point.

We love solving doubts
What is plotting equivalent fractions on a number line?
Plotting an equivalent fraction on a number line means finding the same point on the line for two or more different-looking fractions. 1/2 and 2/4 both land at the exact midpoint between 0 and 1 — they’re equivalent because they name the same value, even though one is partitioned in halves and the other in fourths. The number line makes the equivalence physical: if two fractions plot to the same point, they’re equal in value, period.
Why is the equivalence between fractions like 1/2 and 2/4 important?
The equivalence between fractions like 1/2 and 2/4 is the foundation for almost every fraction operation that follows. A child who has seen — not just been told — that 2/4 lands at the same point as 1/2 understands why finding common denominators works, why simplifying doesn’t change a fraction’s value, and why comparing fractions with different denominators is possible at all. Plotting on a number line is the cleanest way to make that equivalence visible.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. The game opens with an animated first round — Mr. Bear’s helicopter hovers above the number line, a speech bubble asks for a fraction, and the player practises using the arrow buttons and the Drop button before scoring begins. From round 2 onwards, students play independently. This means Grade 3 students can play without an adult walking them through the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 3 rounds takes about 3 minutes. Kids can play a single round in about a minute if they’re practising one specific fraction. There’s no timer pressure — students can take as long as they need to position the helicopter over the right point.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Plot Equivalent Fractions on the Number Line is free to play now and will remain free. It’s part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath’s mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child can plot equivalent fractions on a number line, the natural next steps are comparing fractions with different denominators (which fraction is larger?), and adding or subtracting fractions where finding a common denominator is the first move. Both are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
