# In a diagnostic test in mathematics given to students, the following marks (out of 100) are recorded :

46, 52, 48, 11, 41, 62, 54, 53, 96, 40, 98, 44

Which ‘average’ will be a good representative of the above data and why?

**Solution:**

__Median__ represents the middle value for any group. It is the point at which half the data is more and half the data is less.

Median helps to represent a large number of data points with a single __data__ point. The median is the easiest statistical measure to calculate.

For calculation of median, the data has to be arranged in __ascending order__, and then the middlemost data point represents the median of the data.

An example to figure out the median for a given set of data.

Step I: Let us take the data: 4, 4, 6, 3, and 2. By arranging in ascending order: 2, 3, 4, 4, 6.

Step II: Counting the number of values we know that there are 5 values.

Step III: The middle value here is the median. Therefore, median = 4.

In this question, median will be good representative

1. Each value occurs only once.

2. Extreme values influence the data.

Therefore, the median will be a good representative of the above data.
