**Solution:**

Let the first number be x

Then the other number be 2x

2x + x = 12

3x = 12

x = 12/3

x = 4

Hence, 2x = 8

Thus, the numbers are 4 and 8.

Let the first number be x

Then the other number be 3x

4x = 16
